Exercises

Hello,
I'm new to the community and have recently been diagnosed with dupuytrens contracture, and waiting to attend the musculoskeletal clinic. It's still in the early stages only slightly affecting the smallest finger on my right (dominant)hand. I'm hoping to defer future surgery with massage and exercises. I've also unwrapped my piano after many years, hoping the stretching will perhaps help! I'd be interested to know if others have found massage/exercises helpful at all.

Many thanks

Narla.

Hi Narla

I started playing piano just after my diagnosis. I have since had RT, but in the few years I have been playing my hand dexterity and stretch has definitely increased, and I put it down to piano. I don't do any other deliberate hand stretches, except to stretch the flexor and extensor tendons in the forearm (for tennis and golfers elbow relief). I do perform a gentle massage usually whilst the hands are soaking in very hot water with epsom salts. I would say with re-starting piano don't push it too hard at first as it's too easy to get a finger joint or wrist strain or injury.

Best wishes SB
