Trauma Triggered My Case

My own bout with Dupuytren's disorder began back in the summer of 1996, when I had developed a painful callus on the upper palm of my right hand, from hours of using pliers to remove hundreds of staples from a rug mat stapled to a hard-wood floor.

Now about the size of a quarter, this pesky "callus" has metamorphosed into full-blown Dupuytren's. How do I know this? First off: a friend of mine, the son of a native Norwegian (now deceased), recently noticed my condition, saying that it resembles what used to beset his father, who had to undergo surgery for it. Next: a few months later, another friend notified me of a newspaper columnist's discussion of Dupuytren's; the columnist happens to be a physician, and the symptoms he describes match my condition.

Now I await an appointment with my HMO internist to confirm what I already know (and to give me a prognosis and course of treatment): this sore mound of invasive tissue at the base of my little-and-ring fingers must be met with corrective invasion -- surgery. Otherwise, the mass will continue to grow; and the flexibility of my 63-year-old right hand will continue to diminish.

Meantime, I'm wondering if my apparent genetic predisposition to developing a case of Dupuytren's has anything to do with my almost 50-year-long experience as a breeding ground for lipomas. Does anyone know of any medical studies that link the two conditions?

Duputrens & Lipomas

I too have had lipomas for over 30 years. My father had them as well. I don't know if he had Dupuytrens since he died at 53 the age when I first started to display sypmtoms. My brother who is six years younger does not have lipomas and has no DC.
