Gabapentin and Dupuytrens is it safe?

Hello,

I have LD & DD. I have had radiation on both. Since last round of RT on the foot I began to experience intense pain. Pins & needles, burring, tingle, swelling. All in the ankle and foot. This is the sensation i would sometimes have in the foot before RT. Now it is constant and I stay in such pain. I went to a podiatrist he said possible Tarsal tunnel syndrome. Affects the tibia nerve in ankle.

I then went to a neurologist. I had blood work done and I go for nerve study test following by EMG. The neurologist prescribe a drug called gabapentin. It is to help ease the nerve pain. It is day two on the medication. the symptoms have subsided about 80%

My question:
Does the drug 'gabapentin' have an effect on DD & LD?
Will it make the disease progress?

I have Google to find out but so far not much luck. My hands had not been hurting for the past week and today I have experiencing some discomfort in my hands.

Nerve test:
When conducting the never test they will put pins in the muscle. I am concern that this might cause the fibroma in the foot to grow or the hands to grow.

Does anyone have in experience or knowledge with this?

The neurologist had no clue what ledderhose and dupuytren is so he was unable to help me.

Re: Gabapentin and Dupuytrens is it safe?

Hi Jolene,

Afraid I can't help with the use of Gabapentin and DD/LD as I've never used this drug, but recently suffered from CIDP and have since had several nerve study tests and EMGs. Neither my LD or DD were affected by these... hope that helps some!

Gabapentin appears to be an antiepileptic drug that's also used for a number of other disorders including neuropathic pain. As there seems to be a lot of evidence that anti-epileptic drugs can, if not cause then at least help DD along its way, I'd be asking the neurologist for a different form of pain-killer first thing on Monday!

Good Luck!

Hi Jolene,

I had an EMG this past year to determine nerve conduction or lack thereof in my shoulder and down my arm. It is a little uncomfortable, but not too bad. Needles are thin, like acupuncture. Perhaps the worse part is the electrical impulse they shoot through you. Makes your muscles jump or twitch. Can leave you with a few little bruises. But, truly I tolerated it quite well to my surprise and relief.

I can't imagine it having any effect on causing anything to grow.

Hope this helps!

Nan

I've had an EMG in 2011 and they did not use any needles, just electrodes taped to the skin. My EMG was only for my lower arm, not including my elbow or shoulder.

Jolene,

They usually do both electrodes and needles. It is a good test for determining if you have the tarsal tunnel. It determined my mild carpal as well as the nerve that was blocked in my shoulder.

Re: Gabapentin and Dupuytrens is it safe?

Thanks Potter,

Wow, I did not realize gabapentin might possibly aid in the progression of LD/DD.
This makes sense to me as only 3 days on this medication I have noticed, thickening of the palms, intense burning, tingle sensation. My shoulder pain seems to be coming back. These symptoms come on about 1 hour after taking the medication and last for about an hour. Then after I am fine. No pain.

The saddens me deeply as it has helped tremendously with the nerve pain. Since I began taking gabapentin I have not been sitting at my desk crying in pain like I was.

I have been reading Anti-seizure medications such as phenytoin and certain supplements such as glucosamine/chondroitin in it has an effect on LD/DD, FS, etc.
I also read Continuous phenobarbital treatment leads to recurrent plantar fibromatosis

I did call the pharmacy today to see if gabapentin has any of the above in it
I was told NO gabapentin is not associated with those drugs but does work for helping seizers and many other conditions such a neurotic nerves.

Nonetheless, I do plan on having something else prescribed ASAP and contacting Prof S to get his take on this also.

Can you cite the research and studies to support your statement, "seems to be a lot of evidence that anti-epileptic drugs can, if not cause then at least help DD along its way?"

I'm aware of a couple studies linking DD to phenobarbitone/phenobarbital but not to the entire class of anti-eleptics.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21528776
"This data confirms that not all the antiepileptic drugs are implicated in palmar fibrosis, and suggests that, according to the efficacy and adverse effects, the administration of benzodiazepine reduces the risk of Dupuytren's recurrence."

On the other hand, gabapentine is the generic name for neurontin sometimes known by psychiatric patients as "morontin."

Hello Diane,

Thanks for your comment. This gabapentin has REALLY put the symptoms at bay. The tingle, pin & needs in the ankle, tingle numbness in the toes. I have been taking this drug at 6pm every day. I have not taken it today and the pins & needles are back.

I don't know what to do

Re: Gabapentin and Dupuytrens is it safe?

Interesting to read about Gabapentin and maybe relation to advancement of DD and LD. Also scarey. I took 1800mg. of Gabapentin a day for about 18mths. to help manage nerve pain from ongoing shingles in face and body. Thinking back now I had no signs of DD before starting this medication so who knows. I have 2nd round of RT treatment on right hand end of October. DD also starting in left hand and maybe left foot.

Hello Vonmae,

Are you still taking Gabapentin? If not, how long after you stop gabapentin did you notice DD & LD?

Thanks for the reply. I tried not to take gabapentin last night and I was in such pain that took it again.
I am having intense tingle, burning, pins & needles on one foot. It started around week 7 after first round of RT on that foot.
