Great success in early stage by Massaging bio-oil at Night - quickly relieves pain and tightness

Hi I have had great success by massaging Bio-Oil onto my cord/nodules at night for about 3-6 mins. It is used as a scar reducer. I believe it breaks down the excess collagen or makes it more elastic. Was massaging nightly but now only needs weekly (over about 6 mths now). Have had Dupuytren's for 3 yrs? and am 55.

Almost straight away the tightness and pain goes and next day stays gone. I only use now when tightens up again which is less often now. Mine is now only cosmetic with nodules, puckering and a bit of cordage to little finger. It has really taken the worry and pain away and am able to use my hand without problems. I really should try using it every day now that it seems to have slowed but am too lazy.

I think I got mine from gardening as we have hard clay and I've abused my right hand a bit.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE HAS HAD SUCCESS IN THE EARLY STAGES using Bio-Oil. I don't know why I haven't seen any feedback on early stage Bio Oil use since I posted a reply in Oct. Please share your success or otherwise and please just try it and let us know. I think prevention is the way to go. Gd luck. Liz

Thanks for sharing that Liz. It's difficult to understand how it can penetrate below the skin to reach nodules, but maybe the massage with the oil gives the symptomatic releif. Also other people have reported that using silicon scar softening topical sheets, applied overnight has helped them.

Liz, it's good to hear this is making your hands feel better but in terms of slowing or stopping the disease the product ingredients don't appear to contain anything that has been proven to help. But it probably doesn't hurt anything and like you said, it makes your hands feel better. I used the silicone scar sheets a few years ago and they gave a similar effect but I no longer use them.

In searching for information about DD I have, in the past, come across postings by those with DD and related conditions who claim that papaya extract applied topically will reduce nodules and cords. While it is widely known that enzymes in papaya will break down collagen, I don't really believe any topical treatments will penetrate enough layers of skin and tissue to be of any help. I doubt if it would hurt anything to try it though, I never have.

Re: Great success in early stage by Massaging bio-oil at Night - quickly relieves pain and tightness

Hi, in reply to those who thought oils do not penetrate I have copied this from http://www.kiwidrug.com/search/bio_oil/ which might help explain how it works so quickly:

"Launched by Union-Swiss in 1987, Bio-Oil is the result of two decades of research into oil-based vitamin-enriched skincare. The research focused primarily on solving the following problem: while oils provide the optimal storage environment for vitamins and other active ingredients, they are generally thick and sticky in nature and, as such, do not absorb well. The result is that the active ingredients largely remain in the oily residue on the skin surface and do not penetrate to where they are required.

Bio-Oil successfully overcame this problem through the inclusion of the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™. PurCellin Oil™ dramatically improves the consistency of the mix, making the oil light and non-greasy, thereby ensuring the most effective absorption of the key beneficial ingredients.

Bio-Oil contains Vitamin A and Vitamin E, Calendula, Lavender and Rosemary oils, and Chamomile extract. Bio-Oil contains no preservatives and is suitable for all ages and skin types.

Bio-Oil is a "dry" oil which is non-greasy and non-staining.

What Bio-Oil is Used For

Scars
Bio-Oil helps to reduce the appearance of all scars (both new and old) by improving the condition of skin with scar tissue. Bio-Oil helps alleviate the discomfort frequently associated with scars, such as tightness and itchiness, as well as relieving the dryness.

Stretch Marks
Bio-Oil helps keep the skin as elastic as possible, thereby helping to prevent stretch marks from developing during periods of rapid change in body size such as pregnancy, adolescence and weight loss. Bio-Oil also helps reduce the appearance of existing stretch marks
What makes Bio-Oil so effective?

Bio-Oil contains a combination of Vitamin A and Vitamin E, Calendula, Lavender and Rosemary oils, and Chamomile extract. The proven benefits of these key ingredients, for numerous skin conditions, are well-known and have been widely researched and documented. However, these ingredients are not specific to Bio-Oil.

What differentiates Bio-Oil is its breakthrough ingredient, PurCellin Oil™ which effectively
provides an advanced delivery system for the above ingredients"

P.S. I am from N.Z.
I might also add that I had a period where my condition started to tighten again and I have to sometimes use Bio-Oil nightly again. Still with great relief and full flexibility once used. I can still even pull my little finger back nearly 90 degrees exactly as the other hand (double jointed I think).

Maybe there's not much research into this as it is made of fairly natural products. Perhaps the Dupuytren's forum could be a good starting place to see if this wonderful improvement I experience works for others. Please share your experience - good or bad.

PPS I'm not sure how this works but I think I remember someone mention it breaks down collegen when I was googling. For this reason I would not use it on my face.

http://www.letstalkbeauty.com/stretch-marks/bio-oil-review says:
"Featured Ingredients
PurCellin Oil – This specially formulated oil was inspired by the natural preen oil produced by ducks, which coats their feathers in water-proof oil and helps them swim. In this product, it aids in product absorption and distribution to ensure the nutrients reach the deep levels of skin.
Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A) - Increases the thickness of skin, which aids in skin flexibility. Also helps skin retain water, which keeps it from drying out and forming new stretch marks.
Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) - One of the most well-known skincare ingredients, Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant which helps protect and repair the skin.

In-Depth Review
Bio-Oil is an American-made skin care product which has been helping people who are suffering from stretch marks, scars, and uneven skin tone for over a decade. Its vitamin-rich formula is delivered to the skin via the PurCellin Oil complex, which promises deeper penetration and more efficient nutrient distribution.

Aside from the PurCellin Oil, Bio-Oil includes ingredients like Vitamin A and Vitamin E, which serve to build, protect, and repair skin, and also includes a range of herbal and floral extracts, which serve to soothe and moisturize skin. Those who suffer from allergies and/or acne and those with sensitive skin should take heart, as this product has been designated hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and safe for those with sensitive skin."

Re: Great success in early stage by Massaging bio-oil at Night - quickly relieves pain and tightness

I also found this from a self inflicted injury site on scars:
http://www.lifesigns.org.uk/help/scar-reduction

"Our friend, Denice, shares what she's discovered about helping scars fade and reducing how noticeable they are. Denice would like to remind you that she's not a health care professional.

Massage

This has to be the number one method for reducing the vividness and hardness of scars.

Any sort of gentle rubbing and massaging seems to promote healing (by increasing the blood flow in the tissue perhaps) and seems to break down and smooth the collagen. Remember, scars are made up of a special kind of protective skin that has a lot of collagen in it. Massaging a fully healed yet young scar can help reduce the hardness and perhaps reduce the redness.

You should gently massage the scar and the nearby area regularly, every day at least. In weeks and months you may find the scar is less red, less raised and softer.

Why not use some moisturiser? Perhaps using moisturiser with vitamin E helps, but remember it's the action of massage that helps the most.

Bio-Oil

Bio-oil is used on scars to reduce the appearance of them. It can be bought in various sized bottles and it has a clean but aromatic 'woody' smell to it. To use bio oil, you pour a very small amount onto clean fingers or a cotton wool ball and gently but firmly massage it onto the scarred area. Repeat this every day (evenings are the best time because then you have all night for it to sink in without it being disturbed from moving too much) and results can be seen within 6 to 12 weeks."

Also from the bio-oil website: https://www.bio-oil.com/en-us/product/introduction
"Bio‑Oil is a specialist skincare oil that helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and uneven skin tone. It is also effective for aging and dehydrated skin. Bio‑Oil has won 222 skincare awards and has become the No.1 selling scar and stretch mark product in 18 countries since its global launch in 2002."

and https://www.bio-oil.com/en-us/product/accolades (for huge list of awards given to bio-oil)

Re: Great success in early stage by Massaging bio-oil at Night - quickly relieves pain and tightness

Liz, your posts are close to advertising. However I will let them stand. As I said before, thanks for sharing your experience.

Bio Oil has built up a positive reputation for reducing skin stretch marks and scars. But based on many review sites it does not appear to help everyone.

Also I still fail to see how it can penetrate below the skin to reach and affect nodules or cords for DD sufferers. The claims for PurCellin are just marketing hype, it appears to be a synthetic mineral oil based on the chemistry of a natural duck oil. The claims sound like snake oil to me.

But I agree lets share experiences, and not get carried away by manufacturers claims.

Re: Great success in early stage by Massaging bio-oil at Night - quickly relieves pain and tightness

I'm still new to this condition, but immediately after being diagnosed I did research on the internet. I found one web site that recommends using a variety of vitamins, supplements, and oils. According to their claim, the "driving force" for absorption is DMSO - used mainly on horses and not prescribed for human use. My husband had used that for his back pain and it helped him, even though the smell is overwhelming and horrible!! I didn't have any on hand and didn't want to order a bottle that might not help me, but since my grandfather was a big believer and user of another "horse liniment" as he called it, that claims to give "deep penetrating relief" (Absorbine), I have been using Vitamin E Oil followed by Absorbine.

I have several friends that swear by Essential Oils to stay healthy. One oil in particular claims it "drives in other oils" to make them more effective and that was one factor that encouraged me to try something to help my Dupuytrens.

I can't vouch for the effectiveness of my routine yet, but, hey - nothing ventured, nothing gained, right???

Re: Great success in early stage by Massaging bio-oil at Night - quickly relieves pain and tightness

Hi I can confirm my own great success with bio oil. I am of mature age , live in New Zealand. I Decided to use bio oil on my hands for cosmetic purposes and noticed, to me great surprise the dupuytren's symptoms were disappearing. I had a node in my left hand, big finger used radiation therapy on it and it was successful, but another node appeared under my Index finger, same hand. It got bad quite fast, I almost could not drive , and had started thinking about an operation as I did not want a second dose of radiation.

Do not know it is the massage or the ingredients. I just rub my hands together. Now my left My hand is fully functional, stretches well, and the node itself is smaller than it was. I use the bio oil every day if I can, normally in the morning.

this all started for me last year, so far is holding quite well. But it needs to be done more or less regularly.on a couple if occasions I overdid it while gardening, the node became more prominent and painful. However both times I managed to ge it vaca under control by applying the oil on a regular basis for about 10 days and avoiding heavy work.

So yes, I bear witness to the success of the bio oil treatment.
