Radiation Therapy in Iowa starts today
I will be starting my RT for DD on my right hand today. Both hands have the disease, but my doctor wanted to start with the one that is more progressed and keep an eye on the other one for now. Last week I had a cat scan and now have three small tattoos on my right hand, those were sore!! I am excited to get this started and I am happy that we can now add another state and another doctor that is willing to do RT on DD. I have a lot of confidence in Dr. Collletier and know that he has done his homework. I am greateful to everyone that helped me compile a list of insurance companies that have covered them, that was critical for winning my appeal. Will let you know how it goes. We will be doing the new protocol by the proffesor, 5 days by 3gy and then 3-4 month for the second set of treatement. LauriW

Re: Radiation Therapy in Iowa starts today
Best wishes, let us know how it progresses.
I had first RT of this protocol 3 weeks ago. My hand has felt quite sore since then when gripping or handling things. Some hints of dry skin at one spot but nothing else. Some hints occasionally that it's smoother and other times I think there's no difference, so I wait to see how it turns out. Round two will be in early June.

The positive effects of RT sometimes don't show up until months after the procedure. My RT that was done in Nov. 09 has stopped the progression of the disease in my left hand...the improvement continued for many months after the procedure was done.

Re: Radiation Therapy in Iowa starts today
Lori, The cat scan showed more disease in my hand than I have found. The doctor said he saw DD on my palm una ways under my second finger, I feel no change, is the strange? He is pretty much treating my whole right hand, almost all of it, to the bottom of my fingers. He made this heavy metal plate with cutout for radiation that goes on the machine, I took pics of everything, very interesting. Let me know if you want me to send you some of them. I am very impressed with the care, so far my hand feels the same, no redness, soreness, anything. Day three this morning. I think my smaller nodule may already be smaller, is that possible? I thought it had changed after the first treatment. I have spent so many hours looking at my hands I think I can detect the smallest change. I am thrilled that I have started on the worse hand and assume we will start on the other at some point. It is not as bad so I do wonder if I should take a wait and see for a while, this stuff is so tricky! I think I should treat the left hand soon since there are small nodules and cords already, what do you think? Thanks for thinking of me! LauriW

Re: Radiation Therapy in Iowa starts today
Lauri,
that is great that you are doing well. I always find it amazing that the scans find more than you can feel. Makes me wonder what is going on inside my hand that I can't feel. I don't know if a nodule would get smaller this fast. Who knows, every hand is different. Has the doctor offered an opinion about how long you should wait before treating the other hand? I guess as long as you are comfortable, and no contraction is occuring, then you have time on your side. I did not have any dry skin or notice any changes to my skin until after the second round of treatment. I did notice between treatments that my nodule had started to get smaller.
Good luck this week and let me know how it is going.
Lori
