Could someone suggest a "layman's terms" response for what Dupuytren's disease/contracture is?

It is an unwanted growth similar to scar tissue, localized just beneath the skin on the hand. It takes the form of nodules or cords, predominantly in the palm. When a cord reaches from the palm into a finger, it can eventually contract, causing the finger to curl up toward the palm. It is predominantly associated with a genetic trait and age, but trauma can also cause it to start.
