DR VERONICA DIAZ, DUPYTREN’S CONTRACTURE

On February 5, 2024, Dr. Diaz performed needle aponeurotomy (NA) for Dupuytren’s contracture on my right small finger. The contracture was about 90 degrees and affected my MCP joint. I traveled from Michigan to Jupiter FL, due to the excellent reputation Dr. Diaz earned performing this technique and chose NA because it is a less invasive than the alternatives. The procedure took twenty minutes and I was able to drive after the appointment. The steps involved included:
• Dr. Diaz performed an examination of my hand and described the procedure and expected results.
• Washed my hands to the elbows (3 minutes).
• Three injections of lidocaine to the Dupuytren’s fascia numbing the hand. The first injection was like a dentist visit for a cavity, the second and third injection were pain feel.
• Dr Diaz inserted several needles in four locations to divide the Dupuytren’s cord. Again, pain free.
• Dr. Diaz stretched the finger. The pain was about 4 out of 10. The good news is it occurred and ended, quickly.
• Dr. Diaz bandaged the wound.
The pain after the procedure was minor, however, the next morning I had two ibuprofens.
Dr. Diaz arranged an appointment with Lorena Dreschler, an occupational therapist with the Cleveland Clinic, located in Stuart Fl. Lorena made a splint for my hand and described several exercises. I visited her three times and wore the splint at night for three months.
I am pleased with the outcome. Three months later, I estimate I have a ten percent contracture remaining. This was expected and not unusual. My ability to handle tools, wear gloves, and shake hands is excellent. This was my third encounter with Dupuytren’s. Ten and twenty years ago I had surgery (fasciectomy) performed on different fingers. NA is many times easier on the patient.
Thank you, Dr. Diaz and Ms. Dreschler for the outstanding results. Should I need a tune up, I will return to this team.
