Argentinian female, recently diagnose dupytren´s disease

Hi everyone!
I´m Cristina, from Argentina, I´m 58 years old. I was diagnosed with this, last July 31st. I had never heard before about it. No one in my family had suffered from this before, not even my friends or neighbours. I do not have European ancestors either. I am not overweight, don´t drink alcohol, (just occasionally, a little bit..and if I quit this little bit I won´t miss it, believe me). My only health problem before this one, is asthma, I´ve suffered from it since I was a little kid, and i´ve always had treatments that include corticoids. I could also add that my father suffered fron diabetes type II and he died from it.
Here in Buenos Aires, seems to happen that no therapy is used except surgery. I am at an early stage, I noticed six months ago like a little pea on my left hand, and couple of months later I noticed some cords around, it didn´t hurt, but I started to be concerned about it, I went to an orthopedic surgeon, and he diagnosed me.
I´d like to know if there are people from Argentina in this forum, i´d like to connect with them, to see how they are dealing with this situation. My doctor told me to go back in six months, but also added that until one finger is bent there´s nothing to do. I´m following the forum, and appreciate your posts, where i´m starting to learn a little about this matter.

Re: Argentinian female, recently diagnose dupytren´s disease

Welcome Cristina

Welcome to our club although I'm sure you are not so pleased really. For most it progresses oh so slowly and often does not lead on to contracture of the fingers. But, from now do start looking after your hands more than before, gloves for sports, some chores, and so on. Start a log and maybe monthly photo so you can track any progress.

The main treatments are RT, NA, Xiaflex (collagenase) and various different surgeries, although steroid shots and even perhaps certain type of massage may be helpful. I don't know of clinics in Argentina providing these but I would be surprised if some centres have not heard of Xiaflex or NA as options before surgery.

Best wishes

SB

Thanks a lot SB for your kind words and advices. I will surely follow them..
After July 31st, i´ve visited two other doctors, at different clinics here in Buenos Aires, they diagnosed the same, and gave me the same prognosis...None of the treatments mentioned in the forum, are being held here as far as I Know.
Kind regards,
Cristina

Re: Argentinian female, recently diagnose dupytren´s disease

I would presume perhaps that the relatively smaller population of northern europeans where you live might limit your options.

Good luck finding a workable option for your treatments.

Actually, I am surprised that your doctors recognized it readily where you live, as few doctors here did, where people of northern european decent are common, even prevalent. I have had to familiarize many of my own doctors with it, and none of them had any insight as to treatments, and assumed that surgery was the only choice.

Had it not been for my father's suffering from DP, my own research, and help from people on this forum, I would not know what it is until probably too late for successful RT.

Perhaps you can have a successful outcome, too.

I see that Miami, Florida has a treatment center, likely the closest to your location for RT. I don't have a clue about other treatments.

Kevin
