3rd surgery - looking for more info!

I am two weeks out from the 3rd surgery on my right hand. It seems that the first surgery for a nodule in the center of my palm turned into 'pebble-like' hardness and I had too much pain when I did anything that required squeezing and turning in the palm. Unfortunately, my passion is working on mosaics for art projects and I have not been able to do much at all for a long time because of this issue.

The 1st surgery brought out more nodules that still made it very difficult to do anything that required movements and pressure, and the 2nd surgery did the same! The progression went from below the middle finger out toward the pinkie finger and there is a 'chord-looking' lump that seems to be stretching down toward my wrist.

I am just looking for info on what more to expect from surgery recovery and DD progressions in those who have had the tissues removed rather than the other treatments.

I do hand therapy every day involving stretching and squeezing to try to keep the tendons functioning.

thanks for whatever info any of you can provide!

Re: 3rd surgery - looking for more info!

Hi Mary, you’re probably more knowledgable now about surgery for DD than many. Multiple surgeries does risk problems with additional scarring, new scarring that can impact function, so I would watch for that during the initial phase of healing. Prepare for swelling and some difficulty in making a fist, so ensure you have help with the exercises to restore hand function. If you think along the lines of recovery taking a year anything shorter is a bonus. I hope you chose the surgeon well? Maybe consider RT down the line if the DD does show signs of continuing? Best wishes, do let us know how you get on.

Re: 3rd surgery - looking for more info!

I am now 7 weeks post DD surgery. I am having really good support from a physiotherapist, although a few weeks were lost in doing this as I had problems with my skin graft and 'over granulation'. The wound is now closed and so am doing my best to exercise and stretch my finger.

I had no idea how long this would take and wish that I had explored RT on this before it needed surgery. I am going to see a consultant this week to look at the RT options on my righthand!

Hi Mary,

just curious: did you already have contracture when you had surgery or were nodules removed before fingers contracted?
