Re: Any success with RT retreatment?

I have experience with this myself.

First RT treatment was at VCU in May 2010. I received treatment for 7 days, a total of 21 gray. That fall, my dupuytren's was active and growing. Since I was having to travel outside of NYC anyway, and my deductible is $1k for the treatment, I decided not to mess around with american doctors and go straight to the "Expert", Dr. S in Hamburg. He consulted and said that I did not receive treatment in a large enough area of my palm and he increased the treatment area to my whole palm and my fingers up to the knuckle. I also learned from him I have dormant signs in my other hand & feet. I received treatment for 5 days, a total of 15 gy, in February of 2011. Cut to Aug. '11 I notice my nodules are still increasing slightly. I return to Hamburg in Nov. '11 and get one more round of treatment of 15 gy. So I now have a total of 51 grays RT on the center part of my palm, and 30 grays on the other parts of my hand that weren't treated the first time. The area that has 51gray is more than people typically get, and the maximum amount Dr. S. saw fit to administer to a given area. It's been 1.5 years now, and I have seen no further progression...fingers crossed

Thanks for the input! My doctor has decided to wait a few more months before retreating. So far, the "regrowth" has stopped, so I'm crossing my fingers also! :)

Re: Any success with RT retreatment?

callie:
I asked my Dr. if retreatment were necessary in a year after my RT and she said it would be ok. However, this is somewhat controversial.

I was told at Poole that we only get one go at this which I took to mean that a second treatment wasn't an option? (could have been cost or time?)

I wouldn't want more than 30Gy tbh (would have preferred nothing at all but Dups got me ). So far so good though, several years down the line and regression without progress - long may that continue

Re: Any success with RT retreatment?

Judging RT is difficult. I had two courses of RT in Sept '10 and Jan '11 with Dr Seegenschmidt in Hamburg. In early 2012 I began to get contraction in my right hand, not my left. I emailed Dr S several times and never received and answer. I even contacted the clinic, thinking perhaps he was no longer there. The secretary told me to email her directly and she would see he received it--never received an answer. I guess one can conclude that he didn't want to retreat. I eventually went for NA.

Re: Any success with RT retreatment?

I am seeing a RT Doctor today about my condition. I have cords forming on my left hand and nodules on my right hand with nodules on both feet. No contractors yet but recently the condition has come out of dormancy and is progressing. My mother has this condition and has had surgery. I hope to avoid that.

For those interested in the mathematical explanation of the chances of cancer with this treatment, here is a link:

I will report back on how things go.
