Anyone have recent RT at UCSF with Dr. Gottschalk?
I'd like to know a bit more about how Dr. Gottschalk does RT for Dupuytren's.
1. Does he determine the area to be irradiated or does he have a hand/Dupuytren specialist do that part?
2. Does he (or anyone else on the team) use MRI as an aid to figure out the depth/breadth of the diseased tissue?
3. Does he use the 7 day X 3 Gray protocol or the 5 day X 3 Gray with an down time of 10-12 weeks between the first and second round of RT?
4. How much experience does he have doing RT for Dupuytren's?

I had RT at Palo Medical Foundation with Dr. Chang, a radiation oncologist, and I was his second patient. We decided the area to be irradiated together for my first hand and then almost immediately I had NA on it, then I had NA on the second hand and Dr. Eaton and I decided the area for RT on the second hand-- basically my entire hand up to but not including the DIP joint or thumbs.
Prior to my RT I'd found the literature on MRI and RT and went back and forth with Dr. Chang on using MRI. He did NOT think it was necessary, but finally relented and said he'd do it. By that time I'd spoken to Dr. Eaton who also didn't think MRI was necessary so I didn't have one. As far as I know, very few radiologists doing RT use MRI.
I'm quite curious about docs who use ultrasound when doing NA-- I know there's a doc at the Mayo Clinic that uses it and I found the links below. Why wouldn't ultrasound be useful in determining areas for RT?

When I met with Dr. Gottschalk in 2007 he told me that the use of XRT for Dupuytren's was not an accepted practice and refused my treatment. I met with Dr. Penny Snead who had worked in research with Dr. Seegenschmiedt and she used his protocols to proscibe the treatements at UC Medical Center in San Francisco.
The first round I had done in Germany under Dr. Seegenschmiedt's supervision and as a US citizen I had to pay for the treatments and I was charged 400 Euros. The second round was done in San Francisco and the bill to the insurance company was $8400 and I paid another $1700 out of pocket.
For two weeks after the XRT my hands were sensitive to full sunlight but that was all I experienced and gloves took care of the sunlight problem when I was outdoors.
