Re: Benefits of massage

Hi Denise Australia Calling,
When you say 'massage' do you mean Remedial Massage done by a Therapist or Doing the Massage Yourself ie. Stretching. What stage of Morbus Dupuytren are you at? Regards

Re: Benefits of massage

Hi Newman..........sorry yes I should have explained that I am a massage therapist and a new client has DC. Apparently she has had it a while but her hands/fingers are still relatively straight. She is avoiding surgery for as long as possible and I would like to be able to help her with massage. I have done a bit of research and, though it seems that there is no positive proof of help from medical people, it does seem that some sufferers find it beneficial even if it is just short term. Any views on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Benefits of massage

Hi again Australia Calling
Firstly I would have your client have a look at the Dupuytren Web pages http://www.dupuytren-online.info I was diagnosed 30 years ago and was advised to do gentle stretching exercises including making a clinched fist and if necessary forcing the fingers down to the palm. I have had many surgeries on both hands and exercise every day , first thing in the morning and a couple of times in the day as it only takes a few minutes. I have recently had radiotherapy in an endevour to stop the progression. It seems to be worlking. Radiotherapy works best on the nodules before there is any contraction. You may know there is no cure for dups, with each of us having a different reaction. Myself I have a remedial massage each fortnight where I have both the hands and feet massaged. It certainly makes me feel better and I believe helps with my mobility. Thats my thoughts I hope it sheds some light on the subject. Regards from down under.

Re: Benefits of massage

You're correct, the answer isn't known. Dupuytren's is closely related to scarring; massage is used to reduce scarring after surgery; so there's at least a reason to believe it might help.

Re: Benefits of massage

Many thanks for the helpful responses to my question..........it certainly seems that my client has nothing to lose receiving a massage on her hands so I will let her know, and of course will pass on the web details of the DC site that I found this forum and you guys on!

Wishing you all the best
Kind regards
Denise

Re: Benefits of massage

Hi,

I'd love to know any more thoughts on this subject too. I saw one website is selling a dvd for massage for DC and I've heard some anecdotal reports on line of good results but a massage therapist in my holistic clinic (i'm an acupuncturist) said her gran had it and from her research she had come across it was actually not advised.

So I'd love to hear any more opinions before I start working on my mums DC.

Thanks,

Anne
