RT in the US for DD and insurance companies

Hi everyone,
Some of you know that I have been denied for RT for my DD by BCBS. I have appealed and am ready to take this all the way with BCBS. I think this might be the time to start compiling a list of all of the insurance companies, states, etc, as a database for these fights with insurance companies. Even though I know that BCBS has paid for this therapy in many states, it is very useful to go to them and state with accuracy all of the policies that have paid for the RT and in such help prove that this is MEDICALLY NECESSARY. With that said, I want to start this thread so that everyone can look in one place and see what has happened in the US over the past several years. So I propose that anyone that has been approved or not, start sharing this information! We need to help each other.

Hi Lauri,
Good idea...its very upsetting when insurance denies a necessary treatment. They will approve expensive surgeries but will turn down RT treatment that can prevent progression of the disease.

I had RT in Nov. 09 at Scripps, LaJolla CA. Back then Medicare paid my claim first (I'm over 65), then Anthem Blue Cross PPO paid as secondary insurance. So I had no problem back then....

It has recently been posted by some on this forum that Medicare is no longer paying for RT (???)...and secondary insurance usually pays only after Medicare pays the initial portion...

I haven't verified this personally, but Flojo (Flora), a frequent contributor to this forum, is trying to appeal Medicare's decision, since she had RT at Scripps in 2009 and additional RT in 2010. Scripps claims they never received payment in 2009 from Medicare for Flora's treatment, and are now denying payment for 2010... I am awaiting to see what happens with her appeal, as I need to have additional treatment myself.

Is there anyone who has recent experience with Medicare's denial of RT? If they thought it MEDICALLY NECESSARY in 2009, why are they denying it now?

Re: RT in the US for DD and insurance companies

That is a really good question. When my doctor's billling person in Iowa was looking at my appeal for BCBS during her research she said that she discovered Medicare was not paying for RT. Is that a crime or what, how can we go backwards. especially since this is a disease that tends to present later in life. Myabe we can have something good come from this thread if we combine efforts!

Flojo (Flora) is in the process of appealing with Medicare...let us hope she is successful, because I think Medicare paying is the "key"...usually secondary insurances only pay after Medicare does... this is so important to all of us. I hope everyone gets involved here !!!

Re: RT in the US for DD and insurance companies

Speaking as someone who has been on the provider side, you just need to be prepared to fight and not give in. It also helps if you have a medical professional who is willing to make phone calls, write letters. If you're dealing with a claims rep who isn't familiar with the disease, someone has to give them convincing information for why this is medically necessary. It's hard, but you can change the 'no' to a 'yes'. Specific functional information is very important to medicare. Be prepared to justify your need in terms of how your activities of daily living are effected.

Re: RT in the US for DD and insurance companies

Perhaps it would be helpful if others on this forum (who have had their insurance pay for RT without a problem)
would post the codes of the various procedures done....

Lori, I just got my statements, I have BCBS in Oklahoma and they paid with no problem. I will check to see if I can find the codes they used.
