Early Symptoms? And Early Treatment/Prevention
Hello everyone, I'm knew to this site and am encouraged by your support for one another. I do not have DD that I know of, but my grandmother, mother, and uncle do. I'm really concerned that I'm probably going to get it. I've recently been having aches in my hands but that could be because I'm working essentially full time on home improvement at the moment. Part of the reason that I'm concerned is that I'm a musician. I don't make my living with it but I make sense of my world with it. Music is dear to me.
Enough background, I've got some questions about what to do at this undiagnosed, 32 year-old stage. What are the earliest symptoms that I should look for? Are there any prevention treatments/supplements/activities I should do or avoid? Is there any advantage to doing treatment early in the disease's onset? Is there anyway to be diagnosed before the physical signs show up?
Ok, sorry about the barrage of questions. Thia is all new to me.
Thank you all so much, Joe

Hi Joe
I play piano and have DD so I know your concern. But all is not lost even if you do get diagnosed one day with DD. It is usually slow to develop and the majority who show symptoms later in life never get a contracture. But there is treatment for early stages and even treatment to keep the hand functional, for most, that requires little recovery.
There are some fairly well established risk factors if you have the gene, see http://dupuytrens-society.org.uk/information/risk-factors/, avoid them if possible. I cringe now when I see quite young people using their hands as tools, I used to do that, so during your home improvements I hope you are protecting them when handling tools, and using tools where appropriate. Same applies with sport, kitchen, etc. Maybe ice at the end of the day to keep any inflammation down.
Then, try and forget about it! What instruments?
Best wishes SB
