Post Xiaflex

I just had Xiaflex treatment, with the manipulation done 3 days ago. My doc did not recommend anything further, such as exercises or splint, just gentle stretches. How important is it for me to attend a hand clinic for this? Does it really help, or will it heal up fine on its own?

Re: Post Xiaflex

I had Xiaflex almost 2 years ago and am very pleased with the results. My doc recommended nightly splinting for 3 months. I did that, but my hand was sure stiff in the morning, not related to the Xiaflex but due to osteo arthritis. I wore it pretty faithfully though but I don't know if it made a difference. I was fitted with a splint by a specialist but I didn't like the splint so I made my own out of a glove, some semi rigid 1/8" plastic and some hot glue- just glued the plastic onto the back of the glove and cut the fingers off, worked MUCH better! PT guy gave me some basic flex exercises which I did and still do.

Xiaflex was done 2 yrs ago, my doc sent me home in a splint and a RX for therapy, and pain meds. He was the director in the first clinical trials for Xiaflex in my area. It also removed the thick scarring from surgery. I received 5 injections.

I was in therapy to learn exercises thru the heeling & after the heeling exercises and splinting. My doc told me I must wear a splint always at night . Contraction will reoccur if not splnted in my case.( see the forum on splinting at night),there are exercises available once your ready online as well.Keep the tendons and muscles strong as possible in the fingers, hands & improving grip was a constant goal for me. I wear a Fixxglove nightly, similar to what was described & made by earlier post. Very comfy. Splints are a hassel. Also see pics of Fixxglove and splints on the forum/online.

A Spring grip and a squeeze ball is very helpful to returning strength for using the hand. Also a print out of movement in fingers were given after each therapy session. Keep fingers movin, or they can become stiff and difficult to bend. Now I Wear the glove every other night. Seems to be adjusting well to the change,my fingers are always a bit weak, but I think it depends on each individual case how far along or active the DD is at the time of treatment.

Ask your doc for hand therapy RX. It's important to learn the correct way for movement during the different stages of heeling. Good luck.

Peace & Heeling.

Re: Post Xiaflex

Thanks for your responses, they were helpful. I wanted to order a fixxglove, but cost to ship to Canada was very high. I'll rig my own splint, and see a hand therapist next week.

Shipping to high? There's a co. in California that ships Fissgloves to Canada. I assume u meant overseas to high shipping? Also Eccon made his own glove cut the finger tips off and I think glued the splint on the back of the glove. Eccon might have better details. The zipper in the front in the palm makes the FIXXGLOVE easy on/off, nothing rubs like splints. Splints are made with heated plastic material to fit and Velcro.

See pics on forum.

After a certain amount of heeling after injection it's good to know you will get therapy and lots of info & help there!
Hope your on the mend soon!

Re: Post Xiaflex

The high shipping cost is from California. With the poor exchange rate added in, my cost would be over $240. Hmmm, maybe it would actually be cheaper to order from Europe—but I don't think they would send it while they have a North American distributor. Anyway, I think it'll be worth a try to use the glove-glued on-stiffener for now, see what the hand therapist says next week.

I have just updated my experience with a self-made splint made from a cycling glove. It cost me no more than $5 and works well for me:

Re: Post Xiaflex

Thanks Stefan, that's an excellent solution. I was thinking about a source for an inexpensive, tight enough glove—sports to the rescue! Maybe a golf or batting glove, they come one at a time and are lightweight. Perfect!
