I am sorry to here that you have contraction returning after radiotherapy. In my case I have had many many surgeries including 4 skin grafts. I had a repeat operation to my right forefinger in June 07 and within 4 weeks had developed a number of nodules in the web between the thumb and forefinger including a keloid on the thumb and forefinger. A fast growing nodule developed on the left hand forefinger.
As the result of finding the Dupuytren Society I went to Germany to see Prof Seegenschmiedt.
I have to say I received only selected areas of radiotherapy to avoid the grafting. My case is unusual and infact the Prof had never seen a case such as mine. I spoke at length with the Prof and have learnt more in the past 12 months than the previous 30Yrs about Dupuytrens. In your case has the contraction appeared in the area which was eradiated? You should drop Seegenschmiedt a line ,as he is documenting all of his cases. Unfortunately there is not a 100% success rate and you seem to fall within this category.
We are lucky the the Prof has a passion to help patients with Dupuytrens. It will take a generational chance before younger surgeons embrace this method of treatment. Unfortunately I havent got that time available. Finally I have good mobility and strength in both hands, but I exercise every day. Regards

Thanks.
A question for anyone who's had radiotherapy: Will I be able to use my hand as normal throughout the week (I'm scheduled to go to Poole during the second week of Jan)? I have very limited use of my unaffected left hand so will need to use my right hand fully throught the week of treatment as well as being able to make the 5 hour drive home on the Saturday

Hi Trev!
If your radiation goes like mine, you should have no problems at all. My hands felt entirely normal following the treatment. In the week after, I occasionally noticed a slight, burning feeling, but this was very subtle, and I noticed that the palms looked a little bit red...but again this was slight. I came right home the Friday when my treatment ended and played flute and drove a car and walked the dog with a leash and cooked......

I was advised not to expose the area to chemicals ,bleach , petroleum products, oil paints etc. obviously ,these burn the skin. Not much chance of Sun Exposure at this timeof the year in your neck of the woods. I did experience some dryness of the skin. Prof. Seegenschmiedt recommended the use of a creme containing Urea, which retains moisture and helps remove old skin. He recommended applying the creme at night and wearing a white, washable cotton glove overnight,which facilitates the creme transfer into the skin. For a few weeks after RT I used the creme a few times a day. I did not experience any loss of strength and immediately after RT.toured Germany with my wife carrying the suit cases .Regards.

Hi Newman!
Thanks for the tip about the gloves at night; I will try it. They also gave me a creme with urea...I wonder if it's OK to use Vaseline petroleum jelly? (you said no petroleum products). Between the cold, damp (in our area) weather, and the radiation, my skin is a bit dry, although not as bad as I imagined it might be. I have been avoiding using soap (I've been using Cetaphil, which is a soap-free cleanser) and I've been trying to remember to wear gloves when I wash the dishes!

Hi Megan Australia Calling,
I would not think of Vaseline in the context of Petroleum products. I did mention to the radiologist oil painting and turpentine which is used for cleaning brushes . When I had my skin graft years ago they infact placed sterile dressing from Vaseline over the wound so I would not be too worried about using Vaseline. The only thing Vaseline is very messy whereas the Urea base creme when rubbed in is not sticky. In Oz I used a 10% base Urea but in Germany the creme had only 4 %. The creme produced by" Scholl "for hard dry feet is around 25 % . I spoke with Prof Seegenschmiedt and he advised not to us too higher Urea content 2-4% was ample. I think any moisturizing creme would do the job. Of course some persons show allergies to adatives.I know that many patients use sorbalien or similiar to avoid the use of soap. Cetaphil also have a moisturising lotion which has no fragrance and contains Macadamia nut oil. I have used a massage oil made up of olive oil 4% Eucalyptus Oil 4%Tea Tree Oil and Vanilla. How long do you have until you have the next RT.

That's good to know about vaseline....I'm going to put it on at night and use the gloves. My hand has gotten pretty dry in the saddle of the thumb. This happened after my first round, too...it lasted about a week and then seemed to go back to normal.
I'm all done with my radiation! I finished my second round two weeks ago. Now, just keep an eye on it. I'll have a phone interview with my doctor in February...if necessary, I'll return to Boise, but I'm hoping I won't have to. Much as I like Boise!

I had my two treatmnents at Poole with Dr Goode. Last one 3 weeks ago. I have had no problems at all with my hand use other than dry skin and a little shedding (like sunburn on the palm near the thumb). Completely normal use, driving etc. Used the aqueous cream and E45 lotion (and others as needed). Beginning to notice reduction in the nodules which appear to be breaking down. Some mild sorenes - more like chapped hands than pain.
