SQUEEZING PUTTY 2 x's a day will this help DD?

Hi All,

I forgot to add till later in my other thread about the OT that she sent me home with putty to squeeze twice a day for 5 minutes. She is trying to build up my strength.

But again I don't want to do anything to hurt DD.

No contracture as of yet, DD started April 1010 in both thumbs (nodules at base of one thumb with hidden cord running toward wrist and nodule toward palm of another with cord running to base of finger) and middle finger (nodule in middle of palm and cord runs away from finger towards wrist).

Any advice about the putty?

Thanks.

I don't know about the putty.

For me personally I find it aggravates tendinitis in the wrist and gives some soreness in the finger joints. Your experience might be different. So I can't say if it will affect the DD.

I also play piano, so get some finger exercise that way, but to improve the finger curling and grip strength I do use a wrist exerciser. Not sure of the proper name, you've probably seen them, a 'V' shaped spring loaded device. The handles are well cushioned but locate against the fingers where there's no nodules (*) and the fleshy base of the thumb. I've not noticed any pain or aggravation of the DD in the palm, and the exercise doesn't hurt the DD areas.

(*) OK, I think, but I'm new to this, that since the last month, maybe I have a nodule on the pinkie DIP joint.

Hi Spanishbuddha,

Thanks.

You aren't concerned that the exercise eqipment might have triggered the new nodule? I would be.

I also have carpal tunnel syndrome (mild in both wrists) so I don't know what exercises would be good that wouldn't trigger that as well.

My hands started really hurting for some reason (never could figure out why about 14 years ago) where every day things were difficult like driving and opening jars. Maybe it is the fibro. I had a baby grand that I could not play an antique from the '20's an heirloom. I save my hands for the computer so I can finish my book.

I guess I will have to do research on the putty.

Hi,

I have never had surgery and the only treatment I have had is RT on my nodule and cord. I tried the putty pre and post RT and found it to be stressful on my hand. I use my hands a lot and was surprised that the putty hurt it. I stopped because I felt like it was botheriing more than helping.

The rolling of my palm did help. I used an old rolling pin at first and then found a small wooden ball that worked perfectly.

Hi Lori,

Thanks.

I didn't have a good feeling about the putty so after using it just one day I stopped.

So far everything the OT wants to do I am going to say no to I am beginning to wonder why the need of going? But I still have to contact the OT and my Internist......not seeing OT again till Fri. I also have a $300 deductible that I have to meet so this is not cheap.

Hi,

I went 2 times to the OT and found that he was more knowledgable about post op DD and how to help that. The excersises he gave me to do were stretching ones and they hurt. So I bagged the whole experience.

Hi Lori,

Putty comes in more than one strenght. It really does help get strength back after surgery or radiation. If it hurts then ask for the lowest strength and slowly work your way up.

Hi,

Did you see that I added Pre-contracture to the title. I have no contracture nor have I had surgery, RT or NA. I am trying to do preventative care.

With my Dupuytren's squeezing aggrevates the symptoms and provides no benefit as I already have above average hand strength. Suspect that the squeezing exercise is for recovery after a fasciectomy and is being mistakenly applied to your situation.

Dr. Denkler who performed a NA procedure on my hands said that he believed that the reason there is seldom a contracture problem with Ledderhose's disease is the continual stretching that takes place as people walk.

Stretching is painful initially but no pain no gain seems to often be the case with any structural problems that need to be corrected. The pain for me is temporary as it stops as soon as I stop the stretching.
