Re: Can radiation be used again after failure

I had both hands treated in 2007 and the treatment was 100% effective on the hand where the disease had progressed the least but much less effective with the hand that had required a NA prior to XRT. The theory is that the XRT damages the cells so as to inhibit the increased mutant cells that are impinging movement. I had the XRT done by Dr. Seegenschmiedt in Essen who has been providing this treatment for decades, so I have complete confidence it was done properly. I would not have nearly as much confidence with someone in the USA providing this treatment without the experience or knowledgebase of Dr. Seegenschmiedt.

Re-radiating the hands is low risk with the combination of low dosage radiation and the skin not being anywhere near as vulnerable as the body's organs from the radiation. I would want to investigate having the radiation done by someone with more experience with people with Dupuytren's.

My experience in general and with Dupuytren's as well has been that the practitioner is as important as the technique or technology employed. It takes more time and money to go to the people with the most experience and skill but every time I do so it has been with no regrets.

Bstnman, I appreciate your response. You indicated that you think doing radiation again is safe. Do you have any documentation or any protocal information to back that up? Would love to hear where that opinion is coming from. Any information would be helpful. Thanks! Lauriw

Luba, did you ever talk to you Dr. about doing radiation again and if so what was his/her response? Have you had the contracture treated?

Lauriw, my NA was done by Dr. Tripuraneni at Scripps Hospital in LaJolla, CA. In 2009 RT was "fairly" new in the US and doctors didn't have the experience of Dr. Seegenschmiedt. I never discussed with Dr. T. the possibility of re-treatment. My NA was mostly successful as it stopped the progression of the disease in most of my hand for three years. Eventually my pinkie started to contract at the PIP and two months ago I had a NA procedure on that finger.

In 2009 I also had RT done, at the same time, on my left foot for two hard, marble-size nodules. The nodules in my foot are 90% gone. The RT on my foot was totally successful.
