Can RADIOTHERAPY be used in Conjunction with NA.

Hi Australia Calling.
Firstly I have no experience with NA. I recently had two keloids (raise scar tissue )treated with Radiotherapy whist being treated for MD. on both hands . Recently I read that keloids are best treated within 24 hours of Surgery, and up to 6 months.(series of low dose radiation.) This has led to my question as I pondered its use after NA.
Has anyone had this low dose treatment after NA to stop the regrowth. Regards.

Re: Can RADIOTHERAPY be used in Conjunction with NA.

One of our members in Germany had his hand treated with x-rays after NA. But this was less thna 6 months ago and it will take at least another 3-5 years to see whether it helps against re-growth. And even if it does, it will just be an anecdote, with no real value because you don't know what would have happened without radiating. What we would need is long term data with sufficient numbers of patients and N untreated control group.

The cords have been in place for many years before the NA, so they are not like new scar tissue. Also radiotherapists usually are reluctant to treat something prophylactically. They want to see something growing beefore they pull their gun.

Hi Aussie, calling. I noted tha flojo has recently reported her experience on NA and radiotherapy. I see that other members are considering the same option. Please keep us up to date on a regular basis as this feedback is invaluable to others.

...both Dr. Chang in San Francisco (as posted by Diane) and my own experience with Dr. Tripuraneni in La Jolla...it seems that both these Drs. are of the opinion that radiation immediately following NA can be helpful in stopping the recurrence of NA...

Both Diane and myself are going for radiation for one hand first, and are considering "radiation followed by NA" on the other hand...Since this would be my second NA on right hand, it will be interesting to see if this time it will help, if I follow it immediately by radiation as suggested by Dr. T...

Hi Luba,

I'd revise what you said about Dr. Chang to "of the opinion that the soonest after NA is the best." There are no guarantees that RT will work after NA--or at all- particularly on cords but the sooner after NA, the less scar tissue forming is how I understand it. I'll double check tomorrow at my appointment to make sure my understanding is correct.

My understanding from Dr. T was the same as Diane's understanding about RT after NA. Dr. T said that having NA first was the thing to do and as soon as possible afterwards. Because I did not have time to schedule it sooner, my RT was about 3 months after NA. I do believe it would have been ideal to schedule RT immediately after healing from NA, about 10-14 days. My hand may have tightened up a little during that time, but RT has been successful so far. The tightness across the span from my thumb to my pinky is where cords are visible or I can feel them. I can live with what I have just fine, so doubt I'll have NA again even though it is always a possibility.
