Doctor needed

I have been told I have trigger finger but I do not have the locking or clicking in my fingers that is prevalent with trigger finger, the problems I am having are exactly the same as what I have been reading in regards to Dupuytrens disease, my doctor wants to do surgery ( shots have not helped) but I have not been sure about the diagnosis from the start. I have researched the internet and from that found this forum, hopefully I have found what is really going on with my hands within Dupuytrens disease. I need to find a doctor in my area with experience in this area so I may make an appointment. I am located in the Orlando, Fl. area. Thanks in advance for any help,
Atomant

Re: Doctor needed

Look above under heading "Treatment" for NA. It shows a list of doctors who are very familiar with Dupuytren's.

Re: Doctor needed

You're on the right, IMHO, and evaluating your symptoms with common sense. Sounds like time for a 2nd and/or 3rd opinion if necessary.

Was your diagnosis by a hand surgeon? If not, I'd start by seeing any experienced orthopedic hand surgeon. They see lots of Dupuytren's patients, so they'll be able to diagnose it better than anyone else. Determine for sure what the diagnosis is, and while you're in the surgeon's office hear what they have to say about surgery, even if you prefer looking at alternatives. The reason I suggest this is that there are lots of hand surgeons, so they are easy to find, and they can do the diagnosis.

Re: Doctor needed

Thanks for the answers/info, yes John, my Dr. is a hand surgeon, he has not mentioned Dupuytrens at all, just trigger finger, even though I have no locking/clicking of my fingers, they turn into the palms, at night is the worst, and it is painful, dr. says trigger finger is only painful when it locks, I do not have a problem with my fingers locking at all. Thanks again,
Jim

Re: Doctor needed

OK, this is significant. You said, "they turn into the palms, at night is the worst, and it is painful,....".

What do your fingers do during the day? Dupuytren's contracture is the same day and night in almost all cases. The contraction is a 24/7 situation. Do you have a pronounced cord with the contraction? Can you ever straighten the fingers?

Re: Doctor needed

Thanks Callie, sorry, I should have been all inclusive at beginning, fingers do not lock, they feel like they are being pulled down towards the palm, swelling at the base of my fingers in the soft tissue and the fingers themselves, ( ones involved are index, middle & ring fingers), they do not go all the way back, I cannot to close my hands at all, only half-way, pain is located in palm/soft tissue area at base of fingers and in the fingers themselves, pain is 24 all day, thanks for feedback,
Jim

Re: Doctor needed

In most cases there is no, or little pain, from Dupuytren's. Sometimes an ache or dull pain. Can you straighten the hand/fingers during the day? Are all fingers involved? Do you have a cord (it looks like a tendon, but it isn't)? Do you have nodules (looks similarly to a callus)?

Sometimes there are cases of trigger finger and Dupuytren's together.

Re: Doctor needed

Jim,

I had pain 24/7. When I woke up in the morning, my hand would be curled up and it would hurt to try and straighten it. I had pain in the palm and it radiated up and into my shoulder. It ached and ached. Sometimes I had a shooting pain and other times just a pervasive dull ache that would not go away. Several members of the forum have had pain in different areas of their hand to their shoulder that was caused by DD. After I had RT all the pain went away. I don't have trigger finger so I can not advise or help on that issue. I do have osteoarthritis in the middle and index finger that developed at the same time as the DD. My fingers swell with that and while I do not have pain, they are occassionally stiff and i do have a firm knot at the joint area just below the nail.
