Duration of RT working after last treatment

Hello,
Does anyone know How long after the last radiation treatment does it continue to work?

I had my last treatment on 9/13/13 (5 weeks ago). I went to Chiropractor Saturday because of tarsal tunnel. He used a tool on the bottom of my foot in an attempt to open up the tunnel of the tarsal. He thought it might break up the 2 fibroma's too.

After inspecting my foot today I have two (2) new tiny nodules forming. One on each side of the original two. It appears that one of the original nodules have shrunk or broke in two

QUESTION:
If this tool caused 2 new nodules to form will the last radiation I received Sept 13, 2013 work on those 2 new nodules?

Radiation does not stay in tissue, it's interaction with cells is instant. This is not the case when radiation seeds are implanted in the tissue.

O no. So this means the new nodules will not get the affect of the last radiation treatment?

Hi Jolene,

No, the first radiation treatment will not attack any new nodules, but your second treatment should if new nodules are within the radiated perimeters. I understand that is one of the reasons for the longer 12 week interval between treatments. If new nodules form between treatments they can be treated with the second dose of radiation.

I also wonder if it is a good idea to disturb nodules? I have been experimenting a bit myself in that regard. Trying to observe if I have more pain or activity with nodules forming after massaging, stretching, or just heavy use of my hands and feet. On the whole I would say, "yes."

What is your oncologists opinion about messing with the nodules?

Re: Duration of RT working after last treatment

In the weeks and few months after radiation your skin, body, cells need to recover, and really need a period of rest and not disturbance. Harder to do on the feet perhaps, but the advice after RT on the hands is no heavy work for a few weeks/months to allow recovery. So I am a bit surprised you are performing a physical treatment within RT time frame.

Then, as already stated the radiation works on active proliferating myofibroblasts and does not persist as a prevention within the tissues. You really want the condition to heal and hopefully become dormant and not stir things up.

It was an idiotic thing I did. I can't undue it. I have finished both rounds on that foot.

Anyway I will be able to get a 3rd round of RT?

The new nodules are within the radiated perimeter. But I have already had both rounds of RT on that foot. I was not given any instructions on what to or not to do after radiation.

OMG, did I mess myself up? When i go back in Dec. it will have been 3 months since 2nd round of RT on that foot. Is there any chance I will be able to get RT a 3rd time?

I am beside myself with sickness and worry. I was in pain with the tarsal tunnel and the Chiro said it would open up the tunnel of the tarsal nerves.

What am I going to do? Is there any chance that the radiation could have an effect on these 2 nodules? I am thinking the orginal nodules broke up and the new nodules are a part of the old ones.

What am I going to do? If its 3 months after can I have Radiation a 3rd time?

Re: Duration of RT working after last treatment

I need to take something with me to Dr. Hochman. Something that I can talk him into doing another round on that foot. I thought I read some place that some oncologist in the USA will treat 2 more times if needed and that Prof. S has been known to treat a 3rd time.

Re: Duration of RT working after last treatment

Wow, Jolene, I don't know what to say about 3rd round of RT? I have read in some posts where people have been treated 3 times, but I imagine it depends upon each individual, how soon treatment is repeated, how much, and probably some other factors I am not aware of.

Really hope you can speak with your oncologist about this.

Certainly understand your attempt to try and make things better in your foot! Pain is such a driving force in the decisions we make, and we won't always get it right. At the very least don't beat yourself up about this!

Nan
