early onset and pain
Hello!
I've just been browsing about DC as I've finally gotten in to see a specialist after 11 months on the waiting list!
I am a 25 year old mother of two. My DC presented when I was 21 years old as a nodule in my left palm. Now, at 25 I have a destinct cord visible as well as impaired movement in my pinky and ring fingers of that hand.
I have no known family history.
I also do not have any of the risk factors for DC such as epilepsy, diabetes, alcoholism, smoking, etc.
Unfortunately I do have knuckle pads as well so that significantly increases my chances of recurrence.
I was just curious if anyone else had DC presenting in their early 20's? And what has your progression been like?
Also, does anyone else suffer pain? I have a dull ache in mine most days, its very tender also so I cannot comfortably push a stroller or trolley. I have great difficulty strength training now also as pushups/lifting weights/chinups/etc all cause me pain in the nodule.
Any replies would be greatfully received

Re: early onset and pain
Hi gecko, I also developed DC in my twenties (25), now 33. It started out as a small nodule the doctors thought were a cyst. I had surgery and it turned out to be DC. I first noticed it when i was lifting weights, it was kind of painful. Since the surgery this hand(right) has been in remission and no more nodules, the pain has almost gone away. Last september I started developing a nodule in my left hand. This one grew much faster and I also have a cord as well. The pain was enough to keep me from lifting weights. I has a cortisone shot 5 months ago and it seemed to have subsided the pain. Still hurts but not as bad when the nodule was forming. I have no familly history of DC or any of the other higher risk categories except for drinking alcohol and being a male.

Re: early onset and pain
Hi,
Im 24 and was diagnosed with Dupuytrens when I was 22. I did not have any cords simply a large nodule on the DIP joint of my right little finger.
In my case it progressed from diagnosis to needing surgery in about 1.5 years which I had on Jan 28th of this year. The doctor told me this was a fairly fast rate of progression and was probably due to my age.
During this period there where sporadic bursts of dull pain in my finger but it never lasted for more than about 20 minutes and was fairly infrequent.
Surgery was successful in my opinion as while I am still wearing a night splint due to the fact there is still some contraction during the day time I have gone back to doing all of the activities I used to with no problem. Including activities that are rather rough and require lots of grip such as medieval re-enactment that I do

Re: early onset and pain
Hi,
I developed it at age 53, and I do have pain. From reading on the forum, I seem to have more pain than others. If I drive or rest my hand on something for no more than a few minutes my cord and nodule hurts. I can no longer do work that excessively uses my hand. I have not been able to play tennis or golf to the degree I used to. Even using the treadmill hurts if I rest my hand on the bar.
I have found that if I wear a mans bicycling glove (one where the fingers are cut off and has padding in the palm) I can drive and do more work. This has greatly helped. The women's gloves were too tight for extended mobility.
In the beginning I had pain that would keep me up at night and my whole arm would ache. I had a steroid shot and that reduced the pain for a few months. Mine developed and progressed rapidly from a sore spot to a nodule and cord in about 6 months. I am now finishing up my second round of radiation the week of 8/17th. This has reduced the noduel, the cord, and has greatly reduced the pain.
