Has anyone had treatment with doctors in New York City?

My husband and I have BOTH been recently diagnosed with DD. We saw Dr. Mark Prusansky, a hand surgeon in Manhattan, who advocates a watch and wait approach. I have read enough on this site to want to take early action. I am interested in consulting with a doctor who practices radiation therapy and/or needle aponeurotomy. I see on this site there is one doctor in NY for each of those treatments. Does anyone have first-hand experience with doctors in the New York City area?

You might want to contact Dr. Gary Pess at the Central Jersey Hand Center. He has offices in Eatontown, Freehold & Toms River, NJ. He did NA on both of my hands back in Dec. 2006 at his Eatontown office & is excellent. It will be just a bit of a drive, but a lot closer for you than it was for me. I live 100 miles west of Chicago.

Thank you! How have your hands been since the NA?

I visited 2 hand surgeons in NYC - one from Beth Israel Hospital and one from the Hospital for Special Surgery. Both are of the watch and wait attitude and both are completely against RT. I posted my status update today in the "newly diagnosed - need advice" topic. I did visit a radiologist in NYC who has seen a few dups patients. He is not anxious to perform this therapy since his speciality is oncology. He did say that since I am now his patient - he will administer RT to me - but he also told me to think it over for a while since I am early stage. It's so confusing since early stage is when it is most effective. I am trying to slow myself down a bit and keep my options all open.

Re: Has anyone had treatment with doctors in New York City?

Barbara,

I've decided against RT because of the radiation risks. Today I watched the video of NA performed by Gary Pess in New Jersey. You can find his name and the link in the NA section of this website. I am now convinced that NA is the way to go. I am seeing a surgeon next week at HSS. If he is a watch and wait man, then I am probably going to check out the NYC surgeon on the NA page. If he is also watch and wait, I am going to contact Dr. Pess. I was diagnosed two weeks ago. This website is a godsend.

Judy, Dr. Pess told me "there is a 100% chance these will regrow", but only my left hand has had that happen in the past 6 months. My right hand is doing just fine. I'm not disappointed with the results. Hope you can get some longterm relief soon! - Beardedbard

Thank you. It seems that there is no cure - only relief. I'm willing to go through a relatively minor (I think) procedure repeatedly for that relief.
