How fast is Dupuytren's?

As a sufferer from Dupuytren's and a research scientist, I would like to know how fast / slowly Dupuytren's usually progresses and how variable this progression is.
Would you be willing to help by telling me how long it took for your untreated Dupuytren's to go from the time you first discovered a small nodule to the time you noticed a contraction of the corresponding finger? Until the contraction reached 10, 20, 30 degrees etc? And also the affected finger?
I am sure this basic information must exist somewhere, but I have not found it.

There is a large variation, generally I believe it progresses faster when you are young.

Mine I suspect was particularly aggressive, nodule to 10% contraction in 4 to 5 months.

I guess there may be some direct research out there which presents this variation, possibly as a byproduct of other papers on the subject (e.g. those on NA v. surgery, or radiotherapy)?

Re: How fast is Dupuytren's?

I HAVE 6 FINGERS INVOLVED AND I HAVE HAD THIS ABOUT 2 MONTHS AND I'M NOT TO EXCITED ABOUT WHAT I'M HEARING. SO YOUR TELLING ME ITS JUST A MATTER OF TIME. I HOPE YOUR WRONG. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF JUST MAYBE YOU GET NODULES AND CORDS BUT NO CONTRACTION ? TAKE CARE EVERYONE AND I'M SO GLAD I'M NOT ALONE WITH THIS.

I first noticed DD in my right palm about 20 years ago when I was in my late 40s. At that time it was only lumps in my palm. I believe I was always going to get DD but I believe it came on early because I aggravated that hand severely in doing some manual labor. It took another 16 years -- 2005-- for it to progress in one finger, MP joint only to a 35-40 degree contracture and then I got NA. 1.5 years later, it was back to that contracture and the palm was much worse and I received Xiaflex in the clinical trials- still only MP joint 1.5 years later, once again back to the same contracture, palm worse and this time both MP and PIP joints-- another NA procedure In the meantime, starting mid 2008 a little more than a year ago- AFTER Xiaflex-- it started in my left hand and is extremely aggressive in my palm and 3 fingers of my left hand. I plan NA sometime in the next few months.

Hope this helps,
Diane

The research would show that Dupuytren's is quite variable in time elapse and severity. My Dupuytren's was fairly quiet for ten years and then went from 5 degrees to 90 degrees in one year. My other hand has not started to contract. Some/many people never have contraction after nodules, or dimpling.

Re: How fast is Dupuytren's?

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR HANDS HAVE A MIND OF THEIR OWN. SO THEY DO WHAT THEY WANT WHEN THEY WANT. THIS IS ALL SO NEW TO ME AND THE DOCTORS ARE NO HELP BECAUSE IN MISSOURI THEY JUST WANT TO DO SURGERY AND I DO NOT WANT TO DO THAT. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO IS RADIATION BUT INS. WON'T PAY AND ITS VERY EXPENSIVE. WHAT DO YOU ALL DO FOR PAIN AND THE ITCH YOU GET IN THE PALM OF HANDS? I'M NEW TO THIS FORUM AND ANY INFO YOU COULD OFFER I WOULD BE THANKFUL. HAS ANYONE DID KENLOG INJECTIONS AND IF SO DID IT HELP? AND I ALSO WAS WONDERING IF DOING HAND STRETCHING HELP? TAKE CARE

Re: How fast is Dupuytren's?

Cindy,

Surgery is not the evil event that some portray. I had surgery 7 1/2 years ago and my hand is as good as before I had Dupuytren's. The contraction in my little finger was 90 degrees and looked very similar to the sketch at the top of this page. Stop and think about it, there are thousands of surgeries around the world every month for Dupuytren's, and yet there are only a very few who come to this website to complain about their outcome. There can be problems with Dupuytren's surgery just like any surgery, but it can be very successful.

Re: How fast is Dupuytren's?

I had a steroid shot and it worked for the pain, stiffness, and the tightness I felt. The steroid shot was quite painful, but worth it. My hand felt great for about 2-3 months.

Why won't your insurance pay for it? It is covered by Medicare and that is a conservative insurance. Several people are on HMO's that were initially refused and then got their insurance to pay.

I believe mine was approved because I went to an oncologist and radiation doctor who submitted it for approval and knew what he was doing.

Re: How fast is Dupuytren's?

I think mine is slower then average but I think everyone is different.

Fifth finger left hand
Dimple noticed 12 years ago.
Node developed about 5 years ago followed by aches and numbness.
Diagnosed 3-4 years ago, still had almost full range of movement.
Slight curvature over the next two years.
Second node arrived about 1.5 years back and grew quickly.
Finger is bent at 20 degrees and outer edge of palm is curving in.
Increased pain, numbness and cramping associated with certain tasks.

Right hand, fourth and fifth fingers.
Dimple perhaps 5 years back.
Very slow progress, just some tight sensations when flexing the fifth finger.

HI Aussie Calling. I was diagnosed at 35 Years of age and no surgery until I was around 50 Yrs. Some have an aggressive form of the disease and others have one surgery and never see a medico again. The younger you are diagnosed the worse are your chances. Knuckles Pads and Ledderhose are all further complications. In my case one surgery led to another . As I had an aggressive Dupuytrens I was advised, never to let the contraction advance (using the 'Table Top Test' ) to more than 50 mm or 2 inches. It is the luck of the draw .I have the disease in both hands , the little and ring finger were affected first in one hand and then the other. Both thumbs ,index and the web between were affected. The middle fingers remain disease free. Knuckle pads are evident on the little and ring fingers. Ledderhose developed in 2000. In 2007 after a repeat operation I found the Dupuytren Society which led me to have Radiotherapy .Hope this helps.
