MRI before radiation Yes or No
Hello,
I am wondering Does an MRI really detect the location of ALL the disease, cords, nodules, fibroma, in the hands and feet?
If so, then why aren't all the oncologist requesting this? I have read some do.
I have had RT on one foot. My oncologist did NOT request an MRI. I will be getting 2nd round of RT next week. I requested the oncologist order this for me, which he did.
I went 2 night ago for the MRI. The imaging center sent me home with a copy of the disk. I put it in my laptop to review.
I could not locate the nodule, fibroma, lump in the arch of the foot. Although I am no doctor and not trained to read MRI but when I have had X-rays on body parts I was able to figure it out.
Also I want to request the oncologist change the protocol regarding the depth of the electron beam. I want him to make it go deeper into the foot by about 1/4 of an inch. I believe he did not set the beam deep enough. My ultra-scan had shown the fibroma to be Depth 1.06CM & that is how deep he ordered the electron beam to go.
Please can anyone help offer me some words of wisdom on how to approach the oncologist without insulting his intelligence and request him to change the depth of the beam for the 2nd round?

I did not have an MRI for my RT. I wouldn't know why it would help. Naturally if you request it they will be more than happy to spend your (or the insurance money) money. There is nothing that an MRI would have shown to change anything about my RT procedure.

Wow, that's a heavy duty request. I argued with my radiologist about an MRI and he finally consented but then a hand surgeon said it wasn't necessary. I asked my oncologist several times if he was sure he was going deep enough (I was his second patient) and he assured me that he was experienced enough to know how to do it. I did get a slight radiation burn but figured it was because I had RT immediately after NA. It worried me enough that I didn't do a 2nd round. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gotten an ultra-sound.
Can you ask your hand surgeon to discuss it with him? Perhaps you can ask the oncologist what the downside or side effects would be of going deeper--more exposure? More chance of cancer? In other words politely ask him , "is there any reason not to go deeper?" Maybe he won't have a reason and will do it. Good luck!
