Re: New here.

Third day of RT for me. there is not a shield laying on my hand as there is in the photos on the Dupuytren's site. I mentioned that I was dipping my hands in hot wax for the lanolin to moisturize my hands. They told me to stop that!

Ellen,

Could be. I know he said it was normal procedure when he did mine. You are lucky you did not have to have one. Insurance did not pay for it and it cost $1500.00. Maybe he needed it because of the cord or he wanted it to see how deep the nodule went. Who knows? As you can see from my hand, my cord and nodule defined a rather narrow area to be treated.

Lori

The only reason my docter did the MRI was because i have pain! Normaly he dosen't do MRIs .and my Ins did pay for it thank goodness!
I will get a photo and try to put it up so we have different photo to see.

They used a bolus for my RT. It was a flexible gel-like mat they taped over my hand.

The hot wax sounds painful and I agree you probably shouldn't do that!

Re: New here.

They are using that gel mat on my hand. What is the purpose of that? The hot wax feels great, it is a plug-in paraffin spa, like what would be used during a manicure session. I was told that the RT might cause a sunburned reaction on my skin and the added heat isn't a good idea. Karen

Re: New here.

Hello Lori and Ell,

I have tried to contact Dr. Drimaldi. I am unable to get anyone to call me back. I f either of you have any advise as to how to get through to this doctor and/or get his nurse to return my calls that would be most helpful.
Does his nurse or the doctor have an email address?

Thank you

Hi Karenhart,

Will the radiation team allow you to take photos? I had a thin sheet gel that was placed on the palm of the hand and on the bottom of the foot before the radiation beam was set and turned on. This is suppose to help so the radiation does not go directly to the skin. To my understanding this sheet of gel protects the skin from the radiation.

Re: New here.

This is how the use of the bolus was explained to me by the radiology tech - the bolus is often used when treating uneven areas of a patient (like hands) to make up for missing tissue, or to provide build-up of dose to the skin surface. the radiation beam is most concentrated at a couple of centimeters below the surface being radiated, so to deliver maximum concentration to the skin, they use the bolus to "simulate" tissue above the skin.

So it's actually not protecting skin as much as maximizing the radiation. So you would want it to be used. If this is correct.

Re: New here.

Ok saw Dr Blackwell NO surgery yeah!! And i do have Arthritis in my thumb! And he has never heard of radiation therapy!?he said I should not have any pain but i do! It hurt for my granddaughter to hold my hand! To hold a book, do yard work ect... So he did give me a cortisone shot(spell???) witch was not anything like it was on the feet! Ugh
So Ill just wait and see, he did say putting heat on my hand was fine BUT don't do finger stretches or massage the hand this could cause stimulation to the DD. Imaging center is making me a copy of my MRI all pickup tomorrow, and try to post!
