Re: new nodule after radiation

Lauri, this isn't what you asked, but I can tell you that it is now straightforward to get BCBS insurance in Iowa to pay for RT for DT. I recall that you posted two years ago that you had a big battle to get coverage and you finally prevailed. When I started RT in January there was no problem with the same insurance company, so that's a bit of good news.

Re: new nodule after radiation

I have not gotten new nodules in the irradiated field. I do believe that luckily, we zapped mine at the optimum time. New nodules were forming very fast and that's when it was determined to radiate a larger field, the whole palm, than was indicated just 2 months earlier.

I'm a believer in night splints to fight back proactively against contraction. You might consider that. Not that it will prevent nodules from forming, but it may well delay and/or control the contracture.

Re: new nodule after radiation

I had Rt for left hand 6 month ago. I just returned from Hamburg for my feet and noticed a few weeks ago, a new nodule in my hand a little inside the irradiated area but just close to the border. prof S mentioned it could be just a nodule that was there but that just became harder and noticeable by me. Worth mentioning is that while i did not notice the nodule untilnow, the drawing from the first exam by palpation shows that Prof S had seen that nodule that i did not sea then.

Re: new nodule after radiation

I really appreciate all of the responses. It doesn't look like anyone has had an area of the hand re-radiated for new nodules. It looks like it can be done so am going to continue for a while with the steroid shots and if the cord continues to grow see if my Dr. will do my right hand again. I know he doesn't want to. Am also hopeful that maybe this nodule and new cord will stop growing, but am not at all confident with that. Lori, I know you have tried the steroid shots, has anyone else and if so any change good or bad. I coudn't tell any difference after the first shot but the trials that I have read about do multiple shots about six weeks apart. Thanks again for the notes, so glad we have this forum!!
