Re: Nodule question

If this makes you feel any better i found my doctor by calling around in my area to find somebody that would do rt on my hands. The first 5 or 6 doctors did not want to have anything to do with it because they only take care of cancer patients and then it happened the last doctor on my list and it was meant to be. The nurse put him right on the phone and I spoke to him for over 10 minutes. Then he called me back the following morning. He had never did rt on this hand disease before but i trusted him very much because i felt like if he was taking care of cancer patients he knows what he is doing. This doctor read and read about this and agreed to do it. I didn't even have to think about it because i knew he was the one. You have to remember that these type of doctors are very caring and know what they are doing with this machine. They would not risk this on your hands if they did not know what they are doing. And one more thing these type of doctors you have to put in a group of their own because they are not like any other type of doctor out there. Please keep this in mind when you go and you will see.

Re: Nodule question

Hi Australia Calling, Have you mentioned to your the doctor that he can view the protocol for treating Dupuytrens with RT including some photos from Prof Seegenschmiedt and others book Radiotherapy for Non-Malignant Disorders from this site. (Under radiation therapy/literature.) I can send you a pdf of a paper the prof. wrote which is similiar to that published in the book.( He has given me permission ) You will have to send me your email address through the message system of the forum. Regards .

Re: Nodule question

Australia Calling, Hi David. In my case my right hand was treated with 5X3 GY on 07.The results were excellent. I visited Prof. Seegenschmiedt 4 times in the 12 months and he decided not to administer the additional treatment to my right hand. I did discuss the issuse of the time between treatments as I was travelling to and from OZ with a time between visits being up to 4 months. During our conversation he indicated that sometimes the greater time span between visits was not detremental to the treatment plan as it gave an opportunity to obserse any new growth. In the case of a treatment to one of my feet we did discover a new area which allowed him to expand the bolis for treatment. Hope this helps.

Re: Nodule question

newman, thanks it does help
I got the Dr. S doc from Wolfgang a while back. I plan to bring it for my consult. If I am not satisfied they will do fine locally, I will plan to go elsewhere.

Re: Nodule question

Have you had the RT done. I wouldn't worry about a non experienced person doing it because as was stated they know what they are doing each cancer patient is different and a plan is designed for each individual. I had extensive radiation for cancer. The doctor maped the plan. I had tiny tatoo's it took a couple of hours. The treatments are all done by the technicians.
good luck
Rt was not sugested to me but am interested.

Re: Nodule question

In July 2009, 10 months ago, I had RT on the whole palm of my right hand. Nodules reduced and tightness across my hand from thumb to pinky lessened. It also stopped the itchiness and other symptoms of progressing DD. I am noticing puckering in my pinky finger and thumb above where RT was done. I am also feeling increased tightness in my palm. It may be active DD showing up again in my palm, but at this point I'm thinking that it is DD in the fingers outside the radiated area that may be affecting the whole hand.

I am going back to see Dr. T at Scripps and see what his opinion is. I can't see that NA would be an appropriate treatment, however there may be some cords at a deeper level as there were when I had NA done 14 months ago as well as visible shallower cords then, too.

While I'm there, I'm going to have Dr. T look at my right foot. It feels like "something" might be going on. It may well be more in my head than in my foot, but I'm going to be pro-active with this stuff.

For me, Dr. T validated his professionalism and credibility when he told Luba that RT would not be advised at this time on her hand that she just had NA on. If she has other symptoms or things change, she will go back. I don't want any treatment that is unnecessary and I like his approach.

I'll let you know what he says and what my own thinking is.

Re: Nodule question

Flora,

Good luck with your appt. with Dr. T..... I am sure that he will be totally honest and will not suggest any treatment that is not absolutely necessary. My understanding is that he believes that RT is only done when there is proof of active disease.

Re: Nodule question

Just curious when you were talking about tightness across the palm. I had rt 3 months ago and the tightness in the palm has never went away. It helped the nodules get smaller but the cords are still there but then rt isn't really for the cords. At first i thought this is great i'm going to get my hands back but you do not get the full use of your hands back completely. I have been able to use them more than i did but i was wanting it to just go away. And then i knew that somewhere in the back of my head that it has went in remission but the disease is still there. I have mixed feelings about rt right now but its still early for me to give in. I have had to give up certain things that i enjoy like going to the gun range. But maybe one day i will be able to do it again. I just had a horrible weekend using my hands but better today. Please tell me more about the tightness. Take care

Re: Nodule question

My understanding is that RT is not a cure for Dupuytrens...and RT cannot reverse the disease. It can only stop the progression, at least that is what my expectations of RT are.

In my case, ....I had multiple nodules and dimples on the palm of my left hand. I also had a very thin, small cord going from the base of the index finger to the middle joint of that finger (palm side) ...there were no visible cords on the palm and I had no contracture. My palm was always itching and burning.

After RT, the small cord in my index finger is gone. The nodules are much softer, maybe a couple of nodules are also gone. The itching and burning has completely stopped. It seems that I can open my hand much wider. To me all these are indicators that the disease is, ....for now......, not progressing.... Since its only been seven months for me since RT, its too soon to tell how long these results with last.
