Physical therapy in Stage N
Has anyone had PT when you just have nodules/cords and pain? I have read that some believe it helps other say no it hurts or speeds up the problems. My Kenalog shot helped the nodule and cord but not the pain.
I am looking to stregthen my hand and arm. I have upper arm/shoulder pain and can tell my hand is weaker than it used to be (difficulty opening jars and holding on to things). Will PT help or hinder?
Thanks,
Lori

Re: Physical therapy in Stage N
Lori...
I have stage N to N1 DC in my left hand and tried physical therapy as a first treatment before I new what I had. I went for about 6 visits over 4 weeks or so. Included ultrasound, massage and minor stretching.... I only seemed to get minor relief from the pain and felt less tight only for a short time after the visit...12hrs or so. Since I stopped going to therapy and was diagnosed (3/25/09) it has seemed to progress as fast as ever and continues to cause me more pain to stretch or grip. I'm currently looking into getting radiation therapy.
So to answer directly... NO... in my experience physical therapy was a waste of money.

Re: Physical therapy in Stage N
Thanks Alan,
I had a Kenalog/steroid shot and that reduced my nodule and cord by about 30-40% and it has not progressed in growth (that I can see) since 4/7/09. Prior to that it was noticably growing at an alarming rate. One day I did not have a cord and 2 weeks later there was a long one. If you looked at my hand today versus on 4/7th you would hardly see anything. If I do too much work with my hand I can see a change/swelling in the nodule that lasts for the day.
I have to say I am pleased if this works for awhile. If not then I will also be looking to radiation.
Good luck!
Lori
