Re: Post operative therapy

I have been reading through this thread and there have been many good suggestions and reassurances about recovery time. I would like to have more info on specific exercises that are beneficial. My surgeon did not think I needed to see a physical therapist, he said to just keep using it, flexing, making a fist ect...
Any specific exercises would be greatly appreciated.

There's some specifically for Dupuytren's in the iOS or Android pocket physio app from Care UK, see http://www.careuk.com/pocketphysio

Re: Post operative therapy

Your surgeon could be correct. I did all of my own therapy and finger is as good as before Dupuytren's. I flexed all day whenever I thought about it. Made fists often and used a 10" strip of self adhesive flexible bandage like a rubber band over a fist for about ten minutes three times a day.

Re: Post operative therapy

Thank you for the replies.
I tried the app suggested but it kept crashing. I will try it again tomorrow to see if it's working.
I'm going to try the bandage wrap as suggested and the flexing.
Also, do you think it is beneficial to warm the hand in hot water before doing the wrap to help with flexibility?
And ice packs to help with the swelling? I still have a bit of that going on. It's been almost four weeks since the surgery and I got the pin out of my little finger a week ago and it's still swollen a bit.

Re: Post operative therapy

I never used heat nor ice, so I can't give you an answer. I used the "wrap" during the day. I would use the same wrap for three or four days and then cut off another approx. 10 " to make a new wrap. I had swelling until about 8 weeks. I never forced the therapy to the point of pain. Flexing and extending as flat as possible during the day really helped. I used Aveeno lotion to keep the wound moist 24/7. I would carry a small tube of it with me all day. I would also message the wound with the lotion.

Re: Post operative therapy

I had my operation 13th January 14 ( 1st 2 weeks not too bad then things changed ) thumb, index, middle, ring finger all done ! Still unable to make a full fist , still numb and feels like cardboard along my index finger and some tightness in my ring finger . Every day I still massage E45 and Bio-oil in my hand , still wear for a short time a splint between my thumb and index finger and again for short periods a "finger spring clip" on my ring finger . I have just finished my physiotherapy sessions . Trying to remain positive is the difficult thing to do , and just try and carry on with every day tasks . It can be be very frustrating !! I too have read a lot of the posts on this forum and recovery can be many months depending on the extent of the surgery and reaction to this invasive hand surgery . I also have it in my other hand , I do not intend to have a similar operation any time soon !!

Re: Post operative therapy -radiotherapy in Ireland

Hello Angiebrad,

You ask if anyone has had radiotherapy treatment in Ireland for Dupuytrens.

I was treated by Prof. Frank Sullivan at the Galway Clinic and completed RT treatment in my right hand in 2012, and for in my left hand in 2013. I was treated for the condition at early-stage for both hands. I am happy to report that there has been no progression and no side-effects at all so far!

Prof. Sullivan is a very good caring doctor who has a strong personal interest in the Dupuytrens condition. However, he has not treated very many Dupuytrens patients to date. Also - he would insist on a patient seeing a hand specialist/surgeon first - so as to confirm diagnosis etc. However, a hand surgeon would most likely advise against RT treatment - but Prof. Sullivan would need the hand specialist's diagnosis and not necessarily a referral for RT treatment.

Prof. Sullivan will follow the so-called 'German protocol', as published by Prof. Seegenschmidt, in Hamburg.

For my treatment - the Galway Clinic was covered by Irish medical insurance - VHI and Laya.

Please do not hesitate to contact me over this forum or by PM if you so wish - very welcome!.
