R/T - Radiation Burns - Side Effects?

Has anyone gotten radiation burns from R/T in the 5day protocal, break for a few months, then 5days again.?

Has anyone gotten any bad side effects from this treatment?

What about potential cancer and radiatating cells that are healthy? What is the scoop on all that

My hand had zero side effects. The chance of future cancer is almost zero. The information has been presented here previously, but I can't find it. My doctor said that RT could be performed again a year later if needed because the exposure is so small.

I think I'm the only one on this forum that has reported
what appeared to be radiation burns. My hand got very red and it was
super, super itchy, that was the worst side effect. It lasted four or five days and that was it. I took strong oral steroids and that finally controlled it. I have no lasting side effects. I believe the reason for this is that I had RT only a few days after NA. I had RT on my other hand prior to NA and suffered no side effects.

No matter how many times you ask the question, the chance of cancer of the hand is less than 1%.

Re: R/T - Radiation Burns - Side Effects?

Side effects of radiotherapy are described on this website, specifically on page http://www.dupuytren-online.info/radioth...de_effects.html.

Re: R/T - Radiation Burns - Side Effects?

The side effects of radiation are same as for patients who are treated for cancer, except maybe a little less because of the dosage and the location of the diseased tissue.

For the risk of cancer, Wach posted his calculation on this site. I asked my radiation oncologist, and he said the risk of cancer is "tenths of a percent" for me (age 55 male). As the previous poster said, everybody will agree it's less than 1%.

Another risk, which isn't mentioned as often, is permanent nerve damage. Nerve damage can happen in surgery also (a surgeon told me it hasn't happened to him yet, "knock on wood"). And there's nothing that can be done about radiation-induced nerve damage. The risk of this is also in the "tenths of a percent" according to my radiation oncologist.

For burns, yes, they happen to some people, but they are no big deal! I had a burn starting about a week after the 2nd treatment. There was redness and itching, followed by peeling, especially around the folds in the skin. It lasted about two weeks. Like a sunburn. I treated it with petroleum jelly. It did not hinder me at all and I knew it would go away. Compared to the inconvenience after surgery, it's nothing at all. So don't worry about burns.

I weighed these risks by considering the alternative: by not taking the treatment, I would likely need surgery sooner, and maybe multiple times, and surgery has its unpleasant side effects, too.
