Recently diagnosed and frustrated

I was recently diagnosed with Dupuytrens by my hand surgeon, when he noticed a cord in the webbing between my index finger and thumb. It did explain why two trigger finger releases on my index finger have both failed. In the last three weeks my thumb has pulled in toward my index finger significantly enough that I can barely open my hand wide enough to grab my water bottle. It is alarming how fast it has grown.

I have been working with a hand therapist to try to save the trigger finger, but it will require more surgery. This weekend, I noticed another cord in the webbing between my index finger and middle finger.

Fortunately I do go back to the surgeon this week, and will discuss my options. I am only 47, and and have had 3 hand surgeries in a year for trigger fingers and carpal tunnel. I am so frustrated with this whole thing, and having so many hand problems.

If it is this aggressive already, do I have any hope of it slowing down ever? I know my only option this time is NA or other surgery while my index finger is also being fixed. Just hope the progress of this disease slows significantly after that, but quickly loosing hope.

Re: Recently diagnosed and frustrated

I have known and heard of people who have had Dupuytren's triggered by surgery for carpal tunnel. It is easy to understand because if a person is genetically predisposed for Dupuytren's it seems that about anything can set it off. When doing the surgery for carpal tunnel the Dupuytren's is not addressed so it just takes off.

You never know about this disease. I had Dupuytren's go on both hands at the same time. One hand produced contracture of 90 degrees (little finger) in about 18 months while the other hand went dormant and no problem for 13 years.
