Swelling and inflammation 9 weeks after surgery

Hi, I am new to the forum and sure glad I found it. Been reading alot of the comments on here, but have not read any thing on a problem I am having ,after 9 weeks, after my Dupuytrens hand surgery( so much info on here ). I have been going to therapy for over 8 weeks, doing the hand rehab, but I have a lot of swelling and pain on the top of my hand that is there each day, not going away. Also, still not able to make a good fist yet. Any one have any information that would help?
Thanks Joe

What does your OT say about it? I'm 4.5 weeks out from surgery on my right hand. Palm incisions and then incisions up the pinky and middle finger. My hand is still very swollen and painful to touch. My OT says that I should be able to make a fist by 10-12 weeks. I'm hoping for sooner. One thing she did was to get me an 'edema glove'. It is a very thin stretchy material that fits snuggly on my hand and wrist and is supposed to help reduce the swelling.

If your OT thinks your swelling is excessive, maybe she/he would offer some suggestions on what might help.

Re: Swelling and inflammation 9 weeks after surgery

Hi,

Thanks you for the reply. The OT recommended to the doctor, that may be the Medrol Dose Pack for the swelling and inflammation. The Doctor wanted to wait two more weeks before that option. I will see him next Tuesday the 29th. The OT has gone with the gloves , different sizes as we go, and the work out glove for home. This has not made a difference. I am seeing OT twice a week and started seeing him 8 weeks ago. Also doing hand rehab at home each day. I am going to our rehab gym 3 times a week for the last couple of weeks to try to build muscle in the right arm. I have lost alot of muscle in forearm.

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Swelling and inflammation 9 weeks after surgery

I had surgery 12 years ago. I did not go to OT. I think that OT can overdo the exercises and cause swelling. I did continuous flexing all during the day and nothing that was painful. I also kept the wound moist 24/7. My results couldn't have been better.

At about week 5-6 I started using 10" strips of self adhesive bandage (like a big rubber band) to put around my fist for about 10 minutes (three times a day). This really helped in making a fist.

Yes. My OT was telling me that you can definitely do too much! Too much stretching and bending will cause swelling and inflammation. She is pretty specific in how much exercising I can do each day. 10 minutes in the morning, afternoon and evening. She's said that with time, it won't make so much of a difference. But right now, I can overdo it and create more problems.

I use vitamin E oil 3 times a day and I'm supposed to spend 10 minutes massaging that in and massaging the scars with some pressure. In between, I'm using the Aveeno lotion (thanks, Callie!). My incisions are pretty much healed. Keeping my hand moisturized and soft makes it easier for me to keep it flexing and stretching.
