Getting Xyaflex after RT

I'm a 70 yr. old American and had RT in Hamburg with Dr S. in Spring 2013 My condition was very mild and in the beginning stage.I had some small growth in my left hand but I had no nodules or noticeable cords, or contractions but the doctor felt my hands and found a lot of places where he felt that the condition existed. It surprised me.
Anyway he radiated both hands. Half of my left hand and most of my right hand.
Everything was good with no complications and the initial activity in my left hand went away.

About a year after my treatment, Fall 2013, i noticed a small nodule developing in my left hand below my middle(longest) finger at the edge of the treatment parameter.
In Jan 2014, I went back to Dr. S for his opinion and he radiated it again with only half of the treatment (5 days instead of 10days) because he didn't want to over radiate the area.
It didn't work! The nodule is getting larger. It's been over a year since i was treated, there is no contracture at this time but it's growing. I'm thinking of xyaflex but i'm not sure if it can be done after RT. I'm thinking now that i have to wait and see if the progression continues.

Has anyone had Xyaflex after RT and if so was there andy complications as a result of the tissue damage from the radiation and the recovery from the injections and the medicine in your hand and body.
Also, is Xyaflex administered to nodules of non contracted fingers.

Re: Getting Xyaflex after RT

Hi Richard,

I am not an expert but I would think that prior RT should not be a problem for Xiaflex.

To my knowledge Xiaflex is only applied for breaking cords of bent fingers, typically bent by more than 20 degree. I don't think it is injected into nodules. It is preferably injected into the palm. If you have a nodule in the finger, it might not be a good candidate for Xiaflex but ultimately only your doctor can tell.

Thanks for your reply. I should clarify that the nodule is not in my finger but in the middle of my left palm under my long finger... but there are no cords extending upward towards my finger however, i feel a soft cord beneath the nodule extending down towards the heal of my hand. The nodule is hard and more prominent in the morning then it gets smaller as the day goes on.

Do you know of any treatment for early stage nodules?
Dr Denkler mentioned using a cortisone to slow it down .. are you familiar with that?

This is a insidiously fascinating disease. Just when I thought it was arrested... it pops up !!

Thanks for your input

Re: Getting Xyaflex after RT

Unfortunately, besides RT I am not aware of any early stage treatment of nodules. According to our current patient survey cortizone injction is not highly efficient. It might be worth trying once, depending on what your doctor suggests. It seems to help only occasionally and when it does it doesn't last very long, maybe 1 - 3 years.

It would be nice to see the results of the current patient survey. Kindly tell me where i can view them.

Re: Getting Xyaflex after RT

Rich, the survey is still on-going. Results will be published in May 2015 at the Groningen conference http://www.dupuytrensymposium.com/ and afterwards on this website. Will let you know!
