Re: Is there a link between cancer and Dupuytrens?

JohnG:
Thanks, Wach.

I have now read all three papers that you mentioned.

It's clear from reading them that smoking and alcohol abuse are more common among DD patients than the general public.

It's also clear that DD patients that have advanced to the contracture stage have a higher cancer mortality.

After reading these papers, though, I'm still unsure whether the higher cancer mortality could just be due to the smoking and alcohol. The 2000 Swedish paper did not try to adjust for either of them when calculating the cancer risk. The 2002 Icelandic paper adjusted only for smoking, not for alcohol abuse.

Besides lung cancer, the kinds of cancer that seem to be most enhanced for DD patients, according to the Swedish paper, are oral, oesophagal, larnyx, liver and rectal cancers -- I think these are all enhanced with alcohol abuse, so it's too bad that the Icelandic paper adjusted only for smoking and not for alcohol abuse.

Does the risk of cancer increase only for those that have had surgery, or does it increase for everyone that has DD?

Who knows for sure wheather cancer is linKed to DC. I read that study you referred to and the last sentence of that study...
Quote[ The study showed increased total mortality of individuals with Dupuytren's disease stage 2, where 42% of the excess in mortality could be attributed to cancer death ] end Quote. "COULD BE" . Not proof.

I have read DC is anything from a connection to psoriasis to using vibrating machines for long periods such as pressure washers...to job connections, hand injuries, wrist injuries to hereditary.

The science for Psoriasis is the plaque build up on skin goes thru the same pathway as collagen is built up on tendons. The Interluken-23/17 pathway. This signals extra skin to build up on lesions of skin in Psoriasis and the same pathway signals extra collagen build up in DC.

Psoriasis is a Autoimmune disease. I have had psoriasis since a child. I have level 4 DC. DC is a type of arthritis. It is a autoimmune disease. On this forum there are many autoimmune diseases connected to DC that I do no have.

Quote [Our data shows a positive correlation between psoriasis and DC. Patients with the palmoplantar phenotype of psoriasis were more likely to develop DC. By understanding this relationship, dermatologists may diagnose DC early in its onset in patients with psoriasis, prompting referral to hand surgeons when appropriate.] end Quote.

I have every connection mentioned above . So which one could I choose as to how I have DC.??? What is my mortality rate?

I have polyps every three years found thru colonoscopy. This is a pre cancerous condition. The polyps are removed. Where is the correlation to pre cancer corectol polyps to DC ? Oddly my colon doctor has DC. He has DC at a level 1. I will have to ask him about the gene I inherited which causes colon cancer could also have a correlation to DC. I have been closely monitered and may have partial colon removal to prevent colon cancer. That in my opinion is a totally different connection to cancer than the study suggestion that DC "Could Be" a connection to cancer.

Re: Is there a link between cancer and Dupuytrens?

The risk is probably genetic and does not depend on whether you had surgery or not. To what extent it really incerases is not sure, there are only a very few publications on that. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it's in the genes, then you can't do anything against it anyway and there are so many more other factors in the genes ...
