Re: post surgery question (pictures included)

Dawn,

So VERY sorry to read about your shingles on top of everything else!

You are in my thoughts and prayers. What a trooper you must be!

Re: post surgery question (pictures included)

I am happy today because all of my fingers are easily bending down. There's no way to make a fist because my fingers are too swollen and there are too many stitches in my fingers to bend them fully. But at least they bend down fairly easily. I'm still having to wear a bulky bandage because it is infected. At night, I make a thinner bandage and am sleeping with my whole hand splint on.

Stitches come out this Thursday. I can't wait. They are making my fingers and palm so tight and they're beginning to itch. I'm so hoping this surgery will be successful and will give results for a long period of time. And hopefully, the index finger and thumb won't need work for a while. I still need to get the left hand fixed though. That should be doable by using NA. I'd like to get it done before the end of the year. Since I've already paid our insurance deductible for this year, it's be nice to do the left hand this year. The surgeon said it's possible, but it will depend on how fast the right hand recovers from surgery.

Shingles are getting better. I'm thinking it was a light case and we caught it early.

Re: post surgery question (pictures included)

Today was my second OT appointment. Boy, did we work my hand. She said it was looking good. There was an area where the skin had curled up on the edge of an incision and she said that it is okay. It will eventually fall off like a scab.

My range of motion is good. What is truly weird is that the finger that is not working at all is my ring finger. Nothing was done to my ring finger! One big problem is that my middle finger had been pulled sideways under the ring finger. That was corrected during surgery. However, that middle finger still wants to pull under the ring. The OT had to create some additions to my splint to keep them separated at night. During the day she wants me to tape the index and middle fingers together. Gotta train that middle finger to straighten up!

The infection seems to have cleared up and all the incisions do look good and clean. My pinky had contracted to 68 degrees. Today it was at 25 degrees! That is awesome. Now, I hope the surgeon doesn't cause a increase in the disease activity and I hope the surgery keeps those finger corrected for a long time.

Has there been any mention to keep the scar tissue moist with lotion 24/7? That is one thing my surgeon emphasized very strongly. I think it was critical for my recovery. I used Aveeno lotion.

Not yet. I still have stitches. They will be removed on Thursday. The surgeon does not even allow my hand to get wet until the stitches are out. I'm dying to wash my hand! I'll find out on Thursday how he wants me to treat the hand. I will definitely ask about lotion. My whole hand is flaky, even around my wrist. But I also have some incisions that aren't stitched and they are still open a bit. I'll ask though.
