recently undergone surgery

Hello,
I had surgery on November 12th which entailed a full fasciectomy on my right little finger & a palmer fasciectomy on my ring finger. I have read many of the comments on this site & have gained much information from you all. Would it be of interest to you if I was to post weekly the progress that I make following the operation?
I would like to find out from you what sort of physio you received, how soon after the stitches were removed, & any follow up treatment.
I have attatched 2 pictures of my hand before the op.

Regards
Adrian.

Re: recently undergone surgery

adrianh,

Yes, it would be great if you posted weekly about your recovery. Your operation was very similar to the surgery I had almost eight years ago. My hand is still showing zero signs of Dupuytren's. Very important to keep the wound moist with a hand cream 24/7 (I used Aveeno lotion). Then exercise the hand as much as possible during every day. Wear nighttime splint.

Re: recently undergone surgery

Hello Brian,
My Consultant did not mention the option of N A, & I had not discovered the information on this site until after my op.
There are obviously differing opinions on whether N A is appropriate or effective at stage 4 (mine was at this level) However, I can see the benefits of it over the surgery that I have had. Perhaps here in England, the surgery route is the method the NHS approve of?
When I return on Tuesday to have my stitches removed, I will try to get some information from my consultant & let you know her opinions.
Thank you Callie for the info, I will post on a regular basis on my progress. 5 days after the op, I returned to hospital to have the dressing changed. I saw the Registrar who worked with the Consultant, he was pleased with the look of the wound, (not a pretty sight!) He replaced the heavily padded dressing with a lighter one. My 3 good fingers & thumb seem to be normal, no swelling, & I am able to bend them easily. The little finger is still covered in the bandage, but is obviously much straighter than before.
I will report back after next Tuesday (24th November.)

Regards Adrian.

Re: recently undergone surgery

For you info..your photos looked very similar to what my little finger looked like for years. with a 95 degree contracture last January I had N.A.
with Dr. Eaton in Florida USA...The N.A. took about 20 min. and is still nearly perfect.

Re: recently undergone surgery

I've had similar surgery several years ago and would be interested in your recovery. I had physical therapy, and did exercises, for months after the surgery and I think that's very important. The little finger is tough, and surgery on it had mixed results. NA is not necessarily going to succeed there either. Good luck, recovery from surgery takes time but the result can be very permanent.

Re: recently undergone surgery

Hi Adrian

My left little finger was more bent over than yours when I first had NA in Paris in 2004. It didn't work. I'd left it too long I think, and so in 2007 I opted for surgery. It's not completely straight, but hasn't contracted in any way yet (finger crossed!) I had some physio after stitches out, but only for a month I think. I went to the gym the day after the stitches came out, and was rock-climbing a month after that (I always was stupid). Obviously everyone recovers at a different pace, and I am (was) a quick healer. My right little finger has never contracted so much and I've had NA on it twice since 2004 (and going again to Derby in January). I do consider having an operation, but am concerned that I was just lucky with the left little finger, and don't wish to tempt fate (my sister has had about 8/9 ops on almost all her fingers - not a pretty sight)

Good luck with your recovery Richard
