Dr. Denkler did many surgeries and for a long time before he read about NA, so he definitely knows how to do surgery. He releases rather severe contractures of thumbs and fingers including PIP with NA rather than surgery when possible.

Randy: Good point. Agree 100%

NA in DC: Some NA practitioners are more aggressive and/or more experienced than others. In addition, each instance of DC is (somewhat) unique such that the "optimal" treatment may vary somewhat from case to case.

When I had NA done some 3 years ago I eschewed the opportunity to use a local practitioner here in Los Angeles (despite positive forum feedback, albeit primarily relative to "mild" cases - at that time ) in favor of flying up to San Francisco to see Dr. Denkler. who was, and is, one of the leaders (e.g. highly experienced, relatively "aggressive") of the NA movement.

I had a single finger 90 degree PIP contracture. In my case, it turned out to be a GREAT decision. But each person needs to make his or her own decision.

Good. I'm glad you had successful NA on a serious contracture.

These doctors are willing to step out. Thank you and others are/were willing to step out there to give them a chance to get experience. As Dr. Denkler said when he first read about NA, he knew he could do it because as a hand surgeon/specialist, he knows the anatomy of the hand. The same is true of other hand surgeons/specialists.

Who did your NA in the LA area - Dr. Benhaim at UCLA or Dr. Nathan in Long Beach or someone else? I would have gone to Dr. Benhaim, but for me, the trip into LA takes as long as flying up to Oakland. Besides when I was up there, I could stay with my son and see my grandkids! That made a medical procedure a happy event!

Re: Very interesting article about Dupuytren's and surgery (only)

Flojo,

I did not have my NA done in LA. At the time. Dr. Benhaim was just getting started and according to certain sources was not doing PIP NA's. There were also no reports of an NA practitioner in Long Beach at the time. After slow and careful deliberation (as I am extremely adverse to all things medical), I opted to fly up to SF and have NA performed by Dr. Denkler, which turned out to be just about the best decision I ever made - full stop. I never though that my finger would "look normal" again after having been so bent for so many years.

MikeS,
Oops, I misinterpreted your post. With the severity of your contracture, Dr. Denkler would definitely be the one to go to. You chose the Best in the West.
