Re: Dupuytren's & age

Ok here is the thingI am only 29 and I was told I had stage 2 DC back in 2005 and not to worry about it. I have recently noticed that it is starting to effect my thumbs and now my feet and ankles. I have called my specailist and he keeps telling me not to worry about it. But there are many days during the month that I can barely walk because my feet and ankles hurt so bad and are so stiff. I have also noticed that my hands are extremey stiff in the mornings and that somedays depending on how much I do with my hand they get very sore and later the night and into the next day or two I am in alot of pain. How can a doctor who is supposed be there to help with this tell you not to worry about it?? I need to know if there is anyone out there that knows of a better speacialist within the US. I live in Vermont so any where close to me would be better off for me.

Re: Dupuytren's & age

I hear you. Not too much sympathy around for it, or real answers. My doctor actually told me that it was caused by drinking too much! (p.s. I don't drink)

I dont drink either. I was told the same thing, but honestly why is it that doctors jump to the first conclusion about any thing that is wrong with someone. They always look to drinking so what has caused it.

Re: Dupuytren's & age

Angie, you might have a look at the list of doctors on http://www.dupuytren-online.info/NA_list_North_America.html. They are specialized on NA but certainly all of them are familiar with Dupuytren's. For Vermont we are listing Dr. Bean in Berlin.

Re: Dupuytren's & age

Hello,

I have now been booked in for surgery, as it is getting so bad so quick, still unsure as if this is the best route, but I trust my consultant and as I am so young and still have so many years of work left in me I feel it is worth a try. They will also take out 1 knuckle 'saddle' (which they have said are even rarer). I have a few so think I will see how well this works and how long it lasts as to whether I ever have it again!

Am nervous, but will give it a go.

No date as yet, but they have said within 18 weeks, I will up date when I can to let you know how it goes!

Re: Dupuytren's & age

Hi all this is concerning Dupuytrens and age I am a 29 year old female and I have had this disease since a I was about 15 years old. It has mainly affected my pinky on my right hand but as I get older I am starting to notice that its moving to my ring finger. In the past year I have been getting what my doctor called ganglions in my palm and has been treating it with steroids only to have it come back within a couple of months of the procedure and with a little more discomfort with every reoccurance, I am feeling a tight burning sensation from the palm of my hand right down my fore arm, it is preticularily uncomfortable at night, come morning it takes a while before I am able to move my finger at all. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what I can do to help relieve the discomfort or slow down the process?

There is really no true treatment that works for all. I started showing signs of DC as early as 5 and nodules at age 25.. what works for me is a healthy living.. I stretch eveyday..I too feel tight in the morning and sore at night.. just part of my day to day life and do not let it get me down or stop me from what I love.. I am an avid runner and go to the gym 5 daya a week and take pilate class ( has helped a lot) . surgery, NA, and injections not an option for me I have had 2 failed surgeries on my left pip and denied NA and injection case study due to the location of the disease in swirled around my fingers and resting in mt knuckles which is a very hard area to treat.. just treat your body as a temple especially what you eat and drink and exercise regularly.. I have had no new growth since 05..

Re: Dupuytren's & age

Anyone with DC should go see Dr. Charlie Eaton in Jupiter, FL. He is an expert hand surgeon, but he also does the NA procedure. After suffering with the condition for about 10 years, I nervously flew to FL in February of 2007 to have the NA procedure on my right hand, which was stuck in a 22.5 degree bend. I also had the nodule in my left hand. Cortizone was injected into the nodule to retard it's progress. The procedure was Friday and I was back at work on Monday. After nearly 2 years my hands are still straight as arrows and I have full use of both.

The entire trip cost about $3500.00...including the procedure. My insurance carrier told me to have my hand filleted for $35,000.00. I was told to expect months to recover, plus possible skin grafts. Catch your DC as early as possible for the most effective treatment. My only regret is that I let my anxiety level keep me from having the procedure done earlier.

Re: Dupuytren's & age

albertellaraymen, I know how you feel about being written off... Being seventeen, I can hardly ever get my surgeon or family to listen to me about my DC.

Coincidentally, I find it a little ironic that this disease is supposed to only be seen in people of fifty plus years, and yet I see so many people on this site who've had it since they were quite young.

It's been really nice, though, to get so much support on this forum. I didn't think I'd ever find any!
