Any experience on skin grafts

I have both Dupuytrens and Ledderhose, which have both been operated on.
I had my first Dupuytens on my left hand operated on in July 2006. Unfortunately this didn't work and I was referred to another surgeon in 2007 who said he would operate again but I would need a skin graft. I asked for the graft to be taken off of my thigh, but he said it would need to be removed from my upper arm, as it needed to be close to the site on the hand, but it would barely be noticeable as it would be the size of a postage stamp. I had the operation 6 months later, when the dressings where changed, not only was I surprised but also the nurses as I had been left with a 4" cut across my upper arm. I did question this with my surgeon but he said that's how it has to be done. Unfortunately the surgery still didn't work and it has left me with a finger bent 90 degrees , little feeling in my finger and a very obvious scar on my arm. I now have two more Dupuytrens in my hand and two Ledderhose in my feet and not sure whether I want to risk anymore treatment. Has anyone else experienced this with skin grafts?

Re: Any experience on skin grafts

Hi Steph,Australia calling. I've had 4 grafts two on each hand done over 20years ago. The donor site was from each thigh/groin area. I am sorry to hear that your op was not successful. I had radiotherapy in 07 for continuing dupuytrens and Ledderhose . The skin graft areas were not irradiated. The area of skin grafts which are large have had no sign of reocccurrence of the disease, however the colour of the skin tone in the grafts is much darker than the surrounding skin.
You should investigate NA and RT .Radiotherapy is only benificial on the nodules and not cords in Dupuytrens.Regards.

Hi Steph

I too had a skin graph which I was not prepared for and only noticed after the operation. They also took it from my upper arm and left a horrible 4 inch thick scar that has still not healed fully after 13 months.

Re: Any experience on skin grafts

Hi Steph,

I'm well decorated by upper and lower arm scars after 6 grafts. The reddish purple coloration of the scars does fade with time and become whiter and less visible. (I am caucasion) Five of the grafts are clearly visible on the hands and silghtly darker than the surrounding skin. The sixth is not visible and perhaps did not "take". I chose grafts due to the aggressive form of my disease, (early onset along with the diathesis). The grafts have worked and I have no contractures across or around the grafted areas. Sounds like the graft you had was not thick enough or wide enough to stop the recurrance of the contracture, but it does appear that you have an aggressive disease and that full thickness skin grafting is a viable, though as yet unsuccessful, therapy for you to consider.
