Radiotherapy only in DE?

I have recently been diagnosed by two doctors with Dupuytren. One is a hand specialist who put me "in observation" for 3 months. For what I could learn here (THANK YOU!!!), I am in an early stage treatable by radiotherapy and he probably does not know about it.
Problem is I live in Rio, Brazil. Is Radiotherapy only available in Germany? How about the US or Canada? Do I have to go to Germany or should I simply wait until this gets really serious and I have to go through surgery?
One more thing, I am 26 years old, quite young for the statistics you provide. Should I contact any researcher?

Radiation therapy in DE

Hello Gus, unfortunately we are not aware of any hospitals or doctors outside Germany that provide radiation therapy for Dupuytren. The good news is that the therapy is easy to apply for someone who has the right equipment (soft x-rays of 100-120 kV) and is familiar with radiation therapy.

Dupuytren e.V., supported by University of Erlangen, is currently in the process of translating some German research papers into English and compiling an English overview of the therapy. This is for a Canadian hospital and we will publish its address once the first patient had his therapy successfully, hopefully in three months or so.

Maybe you can find a hospital with a department for radiation therapy or oncology (or similar) that would be willing to treat you. We can provide them or you with information on the therapy.

If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to post them in the forum! All the best to you!

Wolfgang

Re: Radiotherapy only in DE?

Following the publication of two reviews (one about 12 months ago) of RT in Germany, a doctor in an oncology clinic in Brisbane Australia was willing to treat me. I suggest you get hold of the two papers and try to identify a radiotherapy/oncology clinic which is willing to use RT to treat benign conditions. Once you find a name, go and see the doctor with the papers and try to convince him/her to provide the treatment. I do not believe it is complicated and if you are 50+ yrs old is of low risk if the protocols are followed.

The papers are
Betz et al

Hi Stephen,

I recently relocated to Australia (Byron Bay) and since I might consider to go for RT in a couple of months I was wondering if you could provide me/us with details of the doctor in Brisbane and if you are happy with your results.

Cheers, dirk

Re: Radiotherapy only in DE?

Hi Dirk

I have just completed the second set of treatments at Premion/Wesley Radiation Oncology. The specialist is Dr David Schlect 07 3870 4366. There has been a noticeable benefit already. The out of pocket cost will be about $1,300.

Re: Radiotherapy only in DE?

I aggree, Cost is an important aspect ! Nevertheless, you have only ONE PAIR of HANDS in your life !

From the diagnosis and the examination skills of the physician are the choice of radiation field size dependent. Those palpatory skills has not everybody and thus, the treated fields may be too small or too large ... Being a doctor myself I would recommend to look for the best experienced physician to examine, evalutae and determine the appropriate treatment and follow-up.

My Proposal: Experience beats Costs ... Good luck with the "beginners", Larry

Hi Stephen,

Tks for the info, very useful. Just wondering if you think it would be a good idea for Wolfgang (and the Doc) to list him under "Treatment, Radiotherapy, Clinics".

Cheers, Dirk
