Collecting data on the effect of NAC

For those who are not registered in our forum:

Dupuytren Society in cooperation with Dr. Charles Eaton started to collect experience that people have/had with taking NAC. We are interested in any effect on Dupuytren and Ledderhose when NAC is taken for a longer period of time, e.g. several months. If you can contribute to this please have a look at our questionnaire at

http://www.dupuytren-online.info/research_funding.html

Thank you for your support!

Wolfgang

Re: Collecting data on the effect of NAC

Wolfgang, Will you please tell me what NAC is and where I could purchase? Sounds like something I would like to give a try as at this point, anything would be better than doing nothing. Thanks!

Re: Collecting data on the effect of NAC

You might have a look at

http://www.dupuytren-online.info/other_therapies.html

and google for "N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine" or search in Wkipedia for Acetylcysteine

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-Acetylcysteine

Sorry for my late response, I just found your post!

Wolfgang

Re: Collecting data on the effect of NAC

Hi Wolfgang, I did some research on NAC and found the possibilty of some side effects was a need to take three times the rate of NAC in Vitamin C to offset future problems. I'm interested because others have reported vitamin C intake can increase collagen formation. I wonder if this should be of concern?

Vitamin C and NAC

I don't know whether it makes sense to additionally take Vitamin C. Did you fidn any publication on that? I would guess taking 1-2 g Vitamin C daily for a while wouldn't cause much trouble but I personally I don't believe in taking excessive vitamins. Eating fruits probably makes sense, taking pills probably less (my opinion). I am not sure either whether NAC helps for Dupuytren, we are just collecting data to get a better picture. I myself have been taking NAC now for about 3 months. I have the feeling that it might have helped for my Ledderhose nodules but those are small anyway. I doubt that it works on Dupuytren cords but, as I said, we are still collecting data and I don't want to have any prejudice. Comments on C would be interesting.

Re: Collecting data on the effect of NAC

Sorry about that, Marjorie! Would you mind filling out a form and mailing it to NAC at dupuytren-inline.info? (I don't want to type the real address here). You can find the NAC form at http://www.dupuytren-online.info/research_funding.html. If you prefer I can fill it out for you as well if you let me know (w.wach at ...) how long you took it, what side effects you observed, changes of disease status (if any) etc.. We would like to get a complete as possible picture and that includes side effects and failures.

Thank you!
Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang.
Can you wait a couple of weeks and I will fill in the form? I am going on holiday on Saturday and my computer is going away for twitching.

Re: Collecting data on the effect of NAC

Hi Wolfgang. My info. came from my local chemist's print out on NAC. From a CD-ROM (Hyperhealth Natural Health & Nutrition). It implies some people get kidney stones from the cysteine. They recommend at least 3 times the quantity of VitC to NAC. ie. 200mg NAC with 600mg of VitC. The symptoms Marjorie has mentioned also follows the possible NAC side effect (in some people) to remove mucous layers in the intestines. I'm still going to try NAC & believe your survey will help in deciding if NAC will be useful for Dup. sufferers despite side effects Regards Dirk
