How to spot DD

Hi Everyone

Just started with DD about 3 months ago. Can see 2 nodules and cords in one hand and feel 3 in the other.
(Just to check, I have a thickening of the tendon below the nodule towards the wrist. Is this a cord?)

Have booked to see RT consultant but want to know how to spot other signs:

I have a small red pin prick (slight indentation I think) on lower part of middle finger, same finger where first nodule started.

Also, if I look carefully, I can see other tiny white dots of raised skin - some you can barely feel and some you can just see. One of these dots is in the middle of the tip of my little finger above the joint. (Didn't think you got DD there?)

Could these be signs of DD or just paranoia?!

Hope you can help, due to see specialist soon about RT and need to be prepared.

Thanks

Re: How to spot DD

I know exactly what you mean about paranoia. It must be part of this disease, because I certainly had it, especially at first.

I don't recognize the little white spots as a symptom, but you never know for sure. Do you have any achy, itchy, crawly feelings in your palm or fingers where the nodules and cords are? There are often some sensations like that. The "tendon" you see might be a cord.

Take pictures of your hand once a month to keep a record of progression. You think you'll remember, but it's really hard to do. It's gradual and you don't realize it.

You are "booked" to see the wrong person. You need to get this diagnosed properly. Given your indications, almost anyone would tell you to wait for further indications before anything is done.

Hi Flora

I have a dull itchy ache at times in the nodules - they sort of 'pulse'.

I also have itchy/tingling in the tissue at the top of my palms and some fingers, but not where there are any nodules.
I'm thinking this could be something other than DD, but pretty certain about the nodules and cords.

Re: How to spot DD

I agree with callie in that you need to see a hand specialist to get the diagnosis made properly.

I also had one or two very small white dots, well before any other DD symptoms. They had fluid in them, almost like microscopic blisters. At the time I put it down to ringworm, but who knows.

DD is a disease of the fascia. So the nodules and cords are part of the deep skin. Cords may follow the path of tendons but they are not part of the tendon. You may be able to differentiate by pinching and lifting the skin, when nodules and cords should move, and flexing tendons when cords should not move.

Other symptoms include some tenderness, aching, tingling, feeling of sticky tape below the skin when stretching.

But, see a hand specialist.

What does sticky tape feel like below the skin?

I guess we are all different but I experienced this.

Experience it for yourself: put a small, 1 inch maybe, piece of tape (sellotape, scotch tape, duct tape - non stretchy tape) on your palm, and now open and close the hand, pick things up, stretch the hand out, and so on. You can feel the tape crinkling and not quite stretching with the skin. It feels like that except *in* the hand and not on top of it.

@ SpanishBuddha,

Good way to describe the tightness across the palm and fingers.

As usual, nobody knows for sure about this weird disease, but I think the itchy/tingling in tissue anywhere in the palm/finger fascia is active Dupuytren's. I think it is working in the fascia before any manifestation of nodules or cords. That's just my thinking, however the radiologists that I talked with listened to my description and accepted those itchy/crawly sensations as indication of active Dupuytren's.

Re: How to spot DD

Back to the little white dots.....

I've already mentioned I had something similar, but thought it was ringworm, well before I had any nodules or other signs of DD.

Well...a couple of years ago on my good non-DD hand I injured a finger joint. Eventually it healed and I forgot about it. But then a couple of weeks ago it started hurting again, and there's a hint of something there, maybe slight swelling of the joint. I'm not aware of re-injuring it though.

Lo and behold today there's a little white blister dot on the side of the joint rubbing against the other finger.

I'm willing to wager I'll have a nodule there over the next few years if not sooner

Re: How to spot DD

Interesting! Keep us posted on how it develops. I never had anything like that, but it's good to know. Who knows? Something like that may show up on me next time and I'll know to be aware.
