Just had Needle Fasciotomy

Just got back from my surgeon's office where she did a needle fasciotomy on the ring finger of my right hand. The finger was bent at 35 degrees at the first joint before the procedure - now, even though it's still wrapped in gauze and stuff it's completely straight! Based on the itchiness I feel right now in the palm where the hole was made I think it's going to be a bit sore once the lidocaine wears off but right now I feel pretty satisfied. I think the worst part was when she was injecting the lidocaine - THAT was painful!

If anyone in the San Jose, Ca area in interested my surgeon is Dr. Stephanie Rowen at Kaiser Santa Teresa.

Yes she is - she's in the plastic surgery department and specializes in hands.

Re: Just had Needle Fasciotomy

Is needle fasciotomy the same as needle aponeurotomy? If so, I think this is really good news that another surgeon is doing NA. Looks like Kaiser is stepping out to be a leader in this. Maybe they'll look at doing RT instead of waiting to do surgery.

I believe they are the same. While I like the idea that Kaiser has the option available I hardly can call them a "leader". When I saw my surgeon about 2 years ago for this issue he said that surgery was the only option available - all other treatments were too experimental. He specifically said that NA was not a good choice because of the chance of cutting nerves instead of the cords.

Dr. Rowen has great respect for my old surgeon, but she said that she has been doing NA for several years and just recently convinced Kaiser to adopt it. I asked her about RT and she says that she hasn't seen enough peer-reviewed data to comment on it. Her biggest concern is chance of causing cancer with the exposure to the radiation. I mentioned to her about the apparent success in Europe and she said she's look into it.

But at least we now have NA as an option - I'd much rather put up with the pain of the lidocaine and the 1/2 hour or so lying there while she pokes around in my hand than the hour or so under general anesthetic while my hand is cut open!
