Re: Radiotherapy in Germany

fitfeet:
Hello again, just to let you all know I am now in Hamburg, got here this morning, flew over from France to UK, then out to Hamburg, security was a nightmare in the UK, I nearly missed the plane because of the delays.
Anyway managed to find my way around, mainly because of the all the valuable assistance offered on this forum. I also managed to get myself a rail card before I travelled which was waiting for me at the hotel, so I can go out and about without too many bills.
Met the Prof. whom has had a good look at my hands and I start treatment this afternoon, so pardon the pun but fingers crossed!
best wishes
Robert

Hi fitfeet, Congratulation on all your effort and the final start of the treatment - it's worthwile !
What impression did you have from the facility in Hamburg and the physcian(s) there ?

Wish You all the best, Larry

Re: Radiotherapy in Germany

Well Larry,
I think they are very professional.
I managed to turn up over nearly an hour late for my appointment this afternoon, simply because my watch was wrong from the UK (Which I had altered after leaving France, but forgot to put back again for Germany!) and yet not a flicker from any of the staff. They just fitted me in as quickly as they could. The initial examination was very in-depth, much more than my doctor's examination in France. I feel I have made a good decision.
My only concern is that I was planning to renovate a house in 2012, but now I think I may have to reconsider those plans, which is a real shame as I do enjoy that kind of work.

Re: Radiotherapy in Germany

Thanks for the feedback, fitfeet, and best wishes.

I return for my second dose in 3 weeks and look forward to meeting the lovely people at the clinic, and Hamburg in early Summer.

Re: Radiotherapy in Germany

I must say the whole experience was just great, the clinic was easy to find, the staff really very helpful and of course Prof Dr Seegenschmiedt was just as attentive as others have mentioned here. Hamburg itself was a real eye opener, I thought it would be a rather dull industrial place. However just how wrong could I be, it was really great, I particularly liked the botanical gardens and the parks. I received an information sheet about care after radiation and Prof. Seegneschimiedt has asked that I put it here for others to read, I do hope this is helpful.
I go back in July for my second course of treatment, this time I will take my family with me, a summer holiday with a difference. The big advantage being the next time we visit my sons speak German.
Spanish Budda, have a great trip, I hope the weather is as good for you as it was for my trip.
Best wishes to all
Robert

Nice to know that you liked HAMBURG - - its really worth there to have a good touristic program to go around ....

All the best to you, Larry

Re: Radiotherapy in Germany

Hi Larry,

if you have specific advices/comments that might be useful for other patients we can include them on the web site where they won't "sink" in the forum. That sinking effect is unfortunately intrinsic to the forum. While the serach function of the forum is usful for digging into posts you still might not know what to search for and the web site offers a good alternative. Please mail me what you think we should add to our web site.

Besides that we already have inlcuded Seegenschmiedt comments on radiotherapy on http://www.dupuytren-online.info/radiation_therapy.html and our "Personal Experience" page http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr...xperiences.html might provide useful info as well.

Wolfgang

Re: Radiotherapy in Germany

Bonsoir tout le monde et voici fitfeet en France,
Good evening everyone and here is fitfeet in France,
I have of course been working through the initial treatment and after effects of my first radiotherapy treatment. I have kept a record of how things have gone, each week I have suffered with a cold. My hand has felt tight, I have been very tired and in the last week had a very bad case of flu. Having spent 3 days in bed and only today started to feel better I decided to try and exercise my hand (I have done this regularly since having treatment). This time to my utter amazement the two large nodules in the palm of my hand, which had been causing me difficulty reduced significantly in size. Before this the nodules had in fact been enlarged and had caused me some concern. During my cold I had significant pain in my palm. But by exercising the results are beyond my wildest dreams. At this time I feel good about the nodules, how they are/or seem to be reducing, the tenderness has reduced significantly.
So at this stage I feel good about my decision to visit Hamburg and undergo treatment. I must admit to being somewhat worried or perhaps concerned would be a better description as to the benefits of radiotherapy. It is early days, but I can report that I have personally seen a dramatic reduction in the size of the nodules and there is no doubt the growth has been stopped in its tracks. Next month I return to Hamburg. I am excited about the opportunity to return and consolidate the good works already done.
Very best wishes to all
Robert

Re: Radiotherapy in Germany

Congratulation fitfeet !

You went to the right place ... I have recently visited Prof. Seegenschmiedt in Hamburg, he is seeing even more patients there than when he was in Essen. The clinic / practice is excellent and well organized. They are seeing about 3 - 5 new patients per week and have a well established routine for patients from abroad ... Starting MONDAY and endinding FRIDAY which allows cheaper travelling by using the weekend rates!

Just a note: My irradiated sites (both feet and one hand) are STABLE , hurray ! I am very happy with the outcome after bad treatment before (SURGERY to the feet!).

Keep well, LARRY

Re: Radiotherapy in Germany

First post, quick history. Had nodules in both hands in my early 20's, which went undiagnosed (the doctor I spoke to didn't know about Dupuytren's) then in my 30's both shoulders froze, then in my 40's my dupuytren's started to contract in both hands. Didn't find this site until last year, when I decided to do NA in Houston, TX (close to family). Have been really satisfied with the results, except the right hand had nerves too close for Dr. Hildreth to get full opening of my hand. Just realized that I have Ledderhose nodules in both feet and am as of today starting to plan on going to Germany for radiation.

Thank you for all your information and for this forum, it has been very helpful. The doctors I saw both for my hands and my feet told me just let it get really bad and then we will do surgery. I am so thankful I didn't do that. Wish I had found you before my shoulders froze, as had surgery on one and when they got inside, there was really nothing apparently wrong.

From what I have read most people choose to go to Dr. S. in Hamburg. My brother-in-law will be taking a business trip in November to Germany and I haven't decided whether or not to wait until then. The nodules seem to be progressing fairly quickly in my feet.

Is there an advantage of electron beam vs x-ray? Also does it always take two trips, or is that dependent on the size, progression, etc. of the Ledderhose?
