Re: Side-effects of radiation
I brought those creams with me - one is called vitamin d-3 cream, made by NOW solutions and the charcoal salve can be ordered online from this site: http://www.buyactivatedcharcoal.com/product/B-6311. You could probably find a good vitamin d-3 cream here in Hamburg from a health food store that carries supplements.

Re: Side-effects of radiation
To Frances ffiscool
It's a bit unusual to have cords without any prior nodules, unless you did not notice them. I recommend you get an accurate diagnosis from a hand specialist, not a general physician or orthopaedic doctor. Best wishes.

Re: Side-effects of radiation
Totally agree that you should see a hand specialist for another opinion. To me it sounds like carpel tunnel, which I had years ago. That being said, with my case of Dupuytren's, I had a cord for four to six months before I got a nodule. I now have three cords and only one nodule. Just starting to feel like a second nodule is deep inside my hand. The specialist believes my nodules started so deeply that they couldn't be felt in the early stages.

Re: Side-effects of radiation
Frances, the swelling you describe could be nodules. Watch to see if they change. Mine were soft and a little sore when they first showed up, then they were not sore as they became a little firmer and not sore.
Just so you know, every person, every hand (even your own 2 hands), every cord, every finger, every nodule is different.
Come back with more questions.

Re: Side-effects of radiation
hello, i thought I had replied to this one but cannot see it.. but thank you for all your comments and replies
I had ultrasound today but for some reason consultant only said to do it on one hand.. anyway, he could see some thickening on index finger but not badly and nothing much else.. so no explanation for the swellings and cords, unless they are tendons, but no inflammatory arthritis etc.
to be honest not sure exactly what his brief was but I mentioned DD and he said no evidence of scarring, which is what would show
so, waiting on bloods to come back
had physio for my neck and she looked at my hands and said because of where i have the neck issues, it is possible that i would have swellings on my hands, although she doesnt know why the cords/tendons hurt
so, I will see what consultant says with all results.. so nothing definite yet as to what
oh the ultrasound guy thought some tiny nodule at base of my index finger but could be other things and i shouldnt have discomfort as i do in both palms given what showed on scan
ho hum......

Re: Side-effects of radiation
I do not remember anyone saying they had ultrasound in relation to diagnosing DD. I think it would be important to find someone who is knowledgeable about DD. If they don't know DD, they are just guessing, I think.
Can you find a hand specialist/surgeon? I wouldn't let him operate, but he should be able to give you a clear diagnosis.

Re: Side-effects of radiation
On my left hand which is the 2nd one to get DD, a cord showed up first. Then nodules started developing at the base of my forefinger. On both hands, my first symptom was a tightness pain inside my thumb when I put my weight on my flattened out hand. With the first one, I thought it was arthritis, but I don't have any arthritis in either hand. The grip in my hand became very weak.
Your description of your hand sounds like DD to me.

Re: Side-effects of radiation
i think the ultra sound was to show if anything up with the tendons as I was originally referred to rheumatologist by my GP. The rheumy said he thought it was early DD but wanted to rule out other things.
The rheumy said if it is DD he will refer me to a hand therapist, but yes, I would want to see a hand specialist. i will see what the bloods come back with
I think my two little fingers are becoming trigger like as they both feel mechanical at times
re the cords, it seems i have them from each finger
looking at my index finger on left hand, I can see what looks like a vein running from tip all the way down, that only appeared today but as it is hot out, then it might be that plus having had physio today
its awful, suddenly i am spending my whole time examining my hands/fingers and they might have been this way a while, but as they didnt hurt, i never examined them before
the strength bit comes and goes, today i have nearly full strength. what changed from last night, i have no idea

Re: Side-effects of radiation
I know the feeling of being obsessed with my hands. After RT when the progression and squiggly sensations in my palm stopped, DD was not constantly in my mind. Before that, if I didn't have something dramatic occupying my mind, DD popped right in and reminded me that it was there. Couldn't keep it out!
