Cold and Aching Hands

I saw a hand specialist yesterday. I have DC in both hands and possibly in my left foot. When I told the specialist that some of my symptoms included aching hands, can't stand getting my hands cold, hands falling asleep at night - he totally blew me off and told me that those are not typical DC signs but the signs of nerve problems or Carpal Tunnel. Anyone out there with these problems?

Re: Cold and Aching Hands

During the period when my dupuytren's was progressing most rapidly, I had constand tingling down the outsides of my arms and into my hands. But I don't think it was caused by the dupuytren's. I took some lessons in the Alexander technique and eventually when I learned to let my shoulders release (upwards - I was locking them down), these sensations went away.

I also used to have cold hands and feet, but these now have less of a problem with this. My hands and feet are sometimes uncomfortable, but have never been what I would call painful.

Exercising the hand by alternately contracting the hand into a fist and then extending the fingers can in my experience improve circulation. Go for high reps and try to keep the hands as loose as possible. A friend of mine has been doing this regularly for years to relieve pain he gets in a knuckle he once broke, whenever his hand gets cold.

Re: Cold and Aching Hands

I had hands falling occasionally asleep at night and suspected Carpal Tunnel but learned that it was just squeezing the hand/wrist while I slept. I tried changing m sleeping habit and it seems to have worked. But that's just my personal experience. Dupuytren can in some cases press on nerves and cause symptoms of CTS. The proper diagnosis requires a doctor. If your MD says it's CTS you still might get a 2nd opinion before deciding for Carpal Tunnel surgery. As surgery might also accelerate Dupuytren I personally would postpone any surgery as long as possible.

Re: Cold and Aching Hands

Scotty.Australia Calling. ( Adelaide) It would be nice in this forum if we would let others know where they are in this big wide world. I would suggest- Firslty get another opion I saw four plastic surgeons before I was happy and felt confortable .Query Carpal Tunnel. There is a reliable physical test you can even try yourself. Phalen's Test for carpal tunnel . Hold your wrists on the flexion position for 60 seconds . If you experience symptons even earlier the test is positive. You can tap over the location of the median nerve in the wrist with your pointing finger of the other hand (called Tinel's sign) if the tapping produces paresthesias (tingling sensation) in the affected hand this is a positive test .You can also have a nerve conduction velocities test (NCVs) which measures the speed of impulse conduction of the median nerve.I've had this test a couple of times after DD operations on my thumb when I had constant tingling. This did eventually go after about 6 months .In winter in really cold conditions I always have to wear gloves.I have knuckle pads which does not help.Try massaging your hand before you go to bed and in the morning .I use an oil which contains eucaliptist, tea tree oil and olive oil with good results. Maintain extending and stretching exercises 2-3 times a day .Hope thsi helps.
