How does the risk of cancer after Open Hand Surgery compare to Radiotherapy?

Australia Calling.I pose the question I've had both treatments. The hand surgeon always throw up the risk of cancer with radiotherapy and the risk has never been mentioned or associated with hand surgery for the treatment of Dupuytrens. However I came upon an old posting with reference to a Swedish Study published in 2000 for a period l965-1994.This report indicates that there is a 24% increased risk factor for those with Dupuytren haveing had hand surgery. There was mention of an increased risk of both prostate and rectal cancer in men and breast cancer in women .

The link http://publications.uu.se/theses/abstrac...n=91-554-5262-0

Having studied Prof. Seegenschmiedt's 10 yr study on radiation I wonder which holds the greater threat?
Finally make sure we all have annual check ups. Regards from down under.

A similar study is the one that we cite in our estimate on the cancer risk of radiotherapy http://www.dupuytren-online.de/downloads...20Dupuytren.htm (stupid link name, agreed).

The paper we cite there is Gudmundsson KG; Arngrímsson R; Sigfússon N; Jónsson T, Increased total mortality and cancer mortality in men with Dupuytren's disease: a 15-year follow-up study, Journal of clinical epidemiology 1 (2002) p 5 – 10). Abstract: http://www.medpilot.de/ips?SERVICE=TEMPL...MEDLINE&RECNO=1

It looks like that people with Dupuytren's don't get cancer more freuqently than people without Dupuytren's but if they get, they are more likely to die from it. Maybe our immune system is overall not so strong in dealing with tumors. BTW: we account for that effect in our above estimate.

The only thing that I would add is that these 3 cancers are some of the most like likely to appear generally anyway. I would be more surprised if the cancer was an unusual type, although that's not to say that we shouldn't take note:smile

Any studies need to be examined keeping in mind that there is not a large enough population to provide statistically accurate information. Very few places in the world are performing XRT for Dupuytrens and so the total number then has to be divided into age brackets, family history of cancer, occupational exposure to chemicals and environmental factors, sex, age, etc.

XRT is being used to minimize calcification of the joints with hip replacement, for minimizing scaring with plastic surgery, and similar procedures where there is potential exposure of organs in the body core. With XRT of the hands this is unlikely to occur.

No one can really say if the same genetic composition of individuals with Dupuytren's overlaps that of a genetic composition and predisposition to cancer, much less by type of cancer, but I suspect this is what is really happening. There is such a strong genetic aspect to both Dupuytren's and many forms of cancer that most likely the two groups overlap.
