My husband is having the Xiaflex procedure on one of his fingers in two weeks and I may have to be out of town on business. My question is.....Can he drive himself or should he be accompanied by someone to the injection appointment and the manipulation appointment, and how will he do after the procedure....Will he be able to manage on his own?

It take a couple hours for the Lidocaine to wear off so if you live close he could be home while its still numb.Have him take some benedryl after the injection for itching.There is some swelling after the minipilation as well,so someone to drive him home is probly best.Good luck. Dave.

Had stitches out on wednesday, doctor said looks great, Occupational Therapist was pleased with range of motion (full Fist and completeley straight when hand open) I have and said I dont need therapy just keep stretching palm and fingers.
In regards to hand cream she said use what you want but it really doesnt make a difference, but if I want go ahead
Pinky still has tingling sensation but less everyday, lots of dead skin tempted to pick...but I wont.
Doctor checked my other hand, and as a I already knew it will be a while before anything needs done. Dont need to see her until it is time for that one.
Overall with reading all the posts, after havibg a release last October - I am glad I chose this surgery because I feel that eventually the operation would be necessary anyways. That is my choice and I am not saying it is for everyone but im glad I did it
will let you know in a week how it is doing

I had Xiaflex in the FDA trials and would not recommend it for anyone. I know at least a dozen folks--at least a third from the trials (and this is important because this is four years after the trials--there's a five year followup of folks in the trials) who have had their DD get much more aggressive AFTER Xiaflex. In my case, what was once a very slowly progressing (hardly any movement at all in 20 years) contracture in one finger of one hand is now DD in all four fingers of each hand, that's eight fingers! Since my Xialfex injections in one cord in 12/07 I've required 5 NA procedures and have had RT in both hands.
That said since your husband has scheduled the injections--I hope he investigated NA first-- here are some of the things I remember from the trials-- my injections were in 2007 before Xiaflex came on the market so protocols have changed. The main thing I remember is that once I had the 3 injections in my cord they wanted me to keep my hand as upright as possible for the next 24 hours--propping it up with pillows overnight, etc. prior to the manipulation. During the trials they did not allow ice or any other means of controlling swelling nor did they allow any local anesthesia prior to the initial injection or during the "breaking"/manipulation--I see someone else has mentioned lidocaine.
Depending on the location of the cord the injection can be painful (but of very short duration if the surgeon is skilled) and the snapping is also painful but very short, just seconds per break and the cord -- or parts of it--sometimes will "break" on their own prior to the appointment the next day. After the initial injection I had lots of swelling in the arm of the hand that was injected which lasted close to a week but was not debilitating; I did not have very much swelling at all in the hand itself. I would ask his doctor for an opinion on whether your husband can drive himself especially with regard to keeping his hand upright--if that's all he needs to do perhaps he can take a taxi.

I think it is one of the most important things you can do (the hand lotion). It really helped me to keep the scar tissue moist. It is helpful when massaging the scar tissue. Plus, it just feels a lot better.

The reactions to the injection vary individually. It might heve hardly any immediate effect, which would allow driving home himself, or swelling and bleeing might start quickly requiring a bandaged hand. If you want to be on the safe side I would recommend having someone drive your husband for both appointments. I myself had Xiaflex injected about and didn't want to drive afterwards. But that was in a city and I simpy took a taxi.

Said I will check back in a week but had to let you know-
I think I was mistaken about what doctor said in regards to using cream...my wife was also there and as usual she corrected me -the doctor said yes use cream but type does not matter
I have used since and yes it does feel much better...in fact way better

Putzo, the more you put the cream on, the faster the dryness will go away, and before long you won't even need to do that. I'm thrilled that it is going so well for you.
hsbridge, having had xylaflex twice with the next day manipulations, I would certainly concur with the opinions that everyone's experience is different, and to cover all your bases, someone should try to be available to drive your husband home both days. Once I was manipulated and had to go back for wound care every other day, I was able to manage the drive (about 25 miles each way), but it was uncomfortable.
Moondanc, I agree that my Dupuytren's has come back with a vengeance since the two shots. Keeping my fingers crossed for my appt. early next month with a hand specialist in NYC who does the NA procedure.

That is great that it is working for you. I used Aveeno lotion (no fragrance).
Question, how much pain have you had? I had almost no pain during the whole process (29 stitches). My surgeon surprisingly said that was normal.

Thank you all for your helpful responses relative to your varied experiences with the Xiaflex procedure and recommendations that my husband be driven to and from his appointments to be on the safe side.
We are obviously hoping that it is as successful as it appears to have been for many of you.
