Post-Op NA
I had NA one week ago on my left hand with Dr. Eaton and am extactic with the results. My 4th and 5th finger were at about 40 degrees and are now straight. I can almost pass the tabletop test and am hopeful that my hand will be totally flat. Before I took the NA plunge, I was quite skeptical, particularly since I had had two successful surgeries (one fasciectomy and one derma fasciectomy) on my right hand. Based on my experience so far, I would higly recommend NA as the first route (even though I was very pleased with the results of my open surgeries).
I would like to know what people's experiences have been during the NA recovery period. Even though swelling has gone down quite a lot, I still have some swelling in an area of the hand where he did work. I did the prescribed 36-hour icing and elevating and have now gone back to icing after a 3-day treatment with Advil. I am trying to accelerate the progress because I am a piano player and need to go back to practicing and playing. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Post-Op NA
Donald,
There is nothing you can do to speed up the process. I was playing drums again in a week with no problem. The colorization and swelling will completely resolve in less than a month.

Re: Post-Op NA
Randy, Thanks for your feedback. Did you ice and elevate beyond the prescribed 36 hours? Did you take any medication? Was your hand still swollen when you started playing drums?

Did you ice and elevate beyond the prescribed 36 hours? No. Did you take any medication? No Was your hand still swollen when you started playing drums? Yes, big deal. I'd had the full OS so this was child's play.

Re: Post-Op NA
Thanks Randy. For those of you who are push-up fans. Dr. Eaton told me not to do them with hands on the floor. It puts some backward pressure on the hands, which may stimulate Dupuytren growth. Blocks are fine, he said. If you cant find them in a store, you can get them online. I just ordered a pair at www.gripitz.com. Daniel

Re: Post-Op NA
Had successful NA with Dr. Denkler. 90 degree PIP. Elevated for 48 hours as instructed. Swelling and bruising subsided gradually over time. ~100% resolved in about one month. Also went to physical therapy for about one month and wore a night splint for the 1st 2 months. Was back at work (traditional desk work) on Monday (procedure was done the previous Friday PM). DEFINITELY worth it bottom line.

Re: Post-Op NA
I have a couple of questions.
1) Is it unrealistic to plan on driving yourself back to your hotel after the NA procedure?
2) How much time should I allow after my procedure before I fly home?
3) Did you require pain medications (beyond OTC Tylenol or ibuprofen)?

Hi Ademas, In answer to your questions 1) I took a taxi back to the hotel. You have to keep your hand elevated and also ice it every hour. I understand that some people have driven right after the procedure but, personally, I was happy I did not have to drive 2) I flew back 2 days later. That way, I did not have to worry about missing the hourly icing sessions (to be done for 36 hours following the surgery) as well as keeping the hand elevated. If you can ensure you can ice and elevate and not have to lift a bag with the operated hand, you probably could fly back the following day. That may also depend on how much work is done on the hand. 3) I did not have to take any madication
Good luck.

Re: Post-Op NA
Ademas,
My two cents:
1) Is it unrealistic to plan on driving yourself back to your hotel after the NA procedure?
It can be done but would be best to be driven or take a taxi. I used a taxi .
2) How much time should I allow after my procedure before I fly home?
My procedure ended about 3 PM. I was in a cab by 4 PM - headed straight for the airport and flew home the same evening. No difficulties.
3) Did you require pain medications (beyond OTC Tylenol or ibuprofen)?
I did not need any RX even though the doctor had provided some with a prescription for more if needed.
I was also told to keep the hand elevated (for 48 hours in my case) and did so but was not required to apply any ice.

My experience with post-N.A. recovery was about the same as described above.
I did have painful swelling that first night. But, that was my own darn fault - I had wrapped the bandage too tightly.
